The miniskirt was a symbol of female emancipation in 1960s London, going on to become one of the most iconic creations in the history of fashion.

Mary Quant, the British designer known for having invented (but many say only introduced) the <a href="https://www.lofficielitalia.com/moda/minigonna-storia-mary-quant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">miniskirt, </a>has died at the age of 93.
A statement from the Quant family to The Associated Press said: "She died peacefully at home in Surrey, UK, this morning...She was one of the most internationally recognized fashion designers of the 20th century and an outstanding innovator of the Swinging Sixties." While she is often erroneously credited as the inventor of the miniskirt, she undoubtedly made the miniskirt the must-have piece of clothing for a new generation of young women. With her Vidal Sassoon haircut she became the face of Swinging London, and was often photographed and almost always wore a miniskirt, even on the occasion of her OBE in 1966.
Quant was born in 1930 in Blackheath, a suburb of London, England. After studying art at university she began a career in fashion in the 1950s, opening a multi-brand fashion boutique, before becoming a designer herself. Other designers of the time also made miniskirts for their collections; there is no certainty that it was really Quant who created it first, although many attribute its invention to her.
