How OMEGA Speedmaster saved Apollo 13

When Apollo 13 lifted off for its mission to the moon on April 11, 1970,&nbsp; no one could have predicted the drama and disaster that lay ahead.&nbsp;

The astronauts on board&mdash;veteran James Lovell and supported by Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise&mdash;were equipped with OMEGA Speedmaster Professional chronographs, an essential part of NASA's official kit for all manned missions since 1965. As described by James Ragan, the NASA engineer who first tested and qualified the OMEGA Speedmaster in 1964, &ldquo;The watch was a critical backup. If the astronauts ever lost the capability of talking to the ground, or the capability of their digital timers, the only thing they would have to rely on would be the watches on their wrists. It needed to be there for them if they had a problem.&rdquo;

And how timely. When an oxygen tank exploded on board just two days after launch, the astronauts were forced to abandon the mission. Houston, as part of its innovative rescue strategy, directed that they move from the Service Module to the Lunar Module. To conserve energy, the astronauts shut down nearly all power, rendering their digital timers useless. With NASA working tirelessly to overcome the challenges, the final hurdle came when a precise 14-second burn of fuel was required to manually readjust the course of the craft for re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. There was no room for error.

In this critical moment, Swigert used his OMEGA Speedmaster to count those urgent 14 seconds, while Lovell guided the craft using the Earth's horizon as his guide. The maneuver worked as planned, and on April 17th, 1970, Apollo 13 splashed down safely in the South Pacific Ocean, 142 hours and 54 minutes after launch. As Lovell later recalled, "We used the OMEGA watch that Jack had on his wrist, and I had to control the spacecraft. Jack timed the burn on the engine to make that correction to get us back home safely."

In recognition of OMEGA's contributions to the success of human space flight missions, the brand was presented with NASA's "Silver Snoopy Award" on October 5th, 1970. The award, named after NASA's unofficial mascot Snoopy, symbolizes mission success and keeping cool in tight situations, and serves as a reminder of OMEGA's part in humanity&rsquo;s quest for the stars. It also highlights the crucial role the Speedmaster played in the "successful failure" of Apollo 13.&nbsp;

More than 50 years later since the mission, the OMEGA Speedmaster continues to be a timepiece of choice. Its robustness, precision, and storied history in space exploration makes it a beloved icon in the world of horology. And even as technology continues to advance, the Speedmaster remains a timeless symbol of ingenuity, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit of exploration that defines the human race.
