In 1976, Patek Philippe introduced a watch that made almost no sense for its time. It was a multitude of reasons. For one, it was large. And made of steel. The Nautilus arrived in the middle of the quartz crisis, when mechanical watchmaking was losing ground to cheaper, more accurate battery-powered alternatives. The design came from G&eacute;rald Genta, who famously sketched it in minutes while watching Patek executives at the Basel fair. Inspired by the portholes of ocean liners, the case featured a rounded octagonal bezel and lateral hinges that sealed the watch like a watertight vessel. The integrated bracelet flowed directly from the case, giving the entire watch a single, uninterrupted silhouette.
The Nautilus proved that steel could carry the same prestige as precious metal when paired with exceptional craftsmanship. Every surface was finished with care. The bracelet alone required extensive assembly and polishing to achieve its fluid movement and sharp transitions.
Over the decades, the Nautilus evolved into one of the most sought-after watches in the world. The waiting lists stretched across years. Eventually, collectors followed every new reference closely. When Patek Philippe discontinued the steel Reference 5711 in 2021, it triggered a surge in demand that pushed prices far beyond retail. Certain versions continually reach auction results normally reserved for rare vintage complications.
Now, in 2026, the Nautilus turns 50. The anniversary is a recognition of the design itself, which has remained remarkably intact across generations. The proportions, bezel and bracelet are unmistakable features of the watch. Though small refinements have improved performance and introduced complications, the Nautilus&rsquo; identity has remained consistent.
In the watch industry, only a few models reach this milestone while remaining at the center of collecting culture. The Nautilus continues to represent the highest level of watchmaking, design and desirability. Fifty years later, its influence continues to grow.

This is the Nautilus that broke the internet. Released to mark Patek Philippe&rsquo;s partnership with Tiffany &amp; Co., this version swapped the classic blue dial for Tiffany&rsquo;s robin&rsquo;s egg blue hue. The model is one of the most talked-about watch releases in recent memory.

Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 5712/1A Moon Phase

For those who want something more technical, the Reference 5712 adds extra functionality without losing the essence of the Nautilus. The asymmetrical dial includes a moon phase, power reserve and date display &mdash; just slightly more complex.

After discontinuing the steel 5711, Patek Philippe introduced the Reference 5811 in white gold. At first glance, it looks almost identical, with the same blue dial, integrated bracelet and familiar proportions, but the shift to white gold changes the overall experience.
