With archival documents glowing across its dial, the watch revisits the invention that gave the chronograph its name more than 200 years ago.

Montblanc’s latest watch takes us all the way back to Paris in 1821, when watchmaker Nicolas Rieussec came up with a clever way of timing horse races. Instead of simply pointing to the time, his machine actually recorded it, using a fixed nib to drop ink onto rotating counters as each horse crossed the finish line.
Hence the word “chronograph”: chronos for time, graphein for writing. It was, quite literally, a machine that wrote time.
More than 200 years later, Montblanc has turned that story into the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Limited Edition 100, a 43mm rose-gold monopusher chronograph that is packed with references to Rieussec’s original invention—but the really good part comes when the lights go out.
Across the dial, Montblanc has used luminescent paint to recreate pieces of the archival material surrounding Rieussec’s invention. It features handwritten portions of the document approving his chronograph, a silhouette of the Academy of Sciences in Paris, a blueprint of the ink hand used on his original machine, and even Rieussec’s signature near the center.

More historical Easter eggs are found around the dial. At ten o’clock, the rose gold-colored flange reads “Compteur de Mr Rieussec,” the name given to the device in the archives. At two o’clock is “Paris, le 15 Octobre 1821,” marking when and where his patent was filed.
Even the way the chronograph works is a nod to the original as in place of the usual hands sweeping around two sub-dials, there are rotating domed discs at eight and four o’clock measuring 60 seconds and 30 minutes. A fixed blued-steel bridge sits between them and acts as the pointer.
The off-center main dial shows two time zones, with a day-and-night indicator at 9 o’clock. A skeletonized second hour hand can be adjusted independently when traveling and then tucked neatly behind the main hour hand when you’re back home. The date sits at six o’clock in an architectural rose gold-colored frame.

Inside is the manufacture Calibre MB R200, an automatic movement combining that monopusher chronograph with the dual-time function and a 72-hour power reserve.
Turn it over and you’ll see that the movement is visible through the sapphire caseback. You get Geneva striping, big blued screws, visible jewels, and a skeletonized rotor engraved with Montblanc’s 1913 emblem and a Grain d’orge pattern. The case is fully polished Au 750 rose gold, measuring 43mm across, with stepped lugs and an onion crown that gives it just enough old-world character.
Then there’s the strap.&nbsp;From the front, it’s a simple black calf leather strap with tonal stitching, tapered into a point to echo the shape of a fountain pen nib. When you flip it over, however, there’s an 1821 map of Paris printed underneath.
Limited to 100 pieces, the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph is essentially Montblanc taking one of watchmaking’s best origin stories and having a little fun with it. The history is there if you want to geek out over it, but even if you don’t, there’s still something very satisfying about wearing a rose-gold chronograph whose secret party trick is making a 200-year-old Paris archive glow in the dark.
