With nowhere to be and no one to entertain, an unexpected night in can become the perfect excuse to slow down, indulge yourself and enjoy your own company.

You know the feeling. You have already started getting ready, changed your outfit at least twice and mentally prepared yourself for the commute when the message finally comes: “Guys, can we reschedule?”
Your first response is usually some variation of “No worries!” followed by a heart or a “hahaha it’s okay.” What you do not say is that you are already taking off your shoes.
Sometimes, there is relief that comes with having plans cancelled. Suddenly, the traffic does not matter, you do not have to figure out what time to leave, and that outfit you were not completely convinced about can go straight back into the closet. The evening you thought you had already given away is yours again.
It is easy to feel guilty about enjoying that feeling. After all, we made the plans because we wanted to see these people. We like our friends. We like dinners that turn into hours of talking, last-minute coffee runs and nights that end much later than expected because nobody wants to be the first to leave. Being relieved that plans are cancelled does not mean you would rather never see anyone.
Sometimes, you simply did not realize how badly you needed a night to yourself until someone gave it back to you.
There is only so much social energy to go around, especially when most of our days are already filled with people. Between classes, work, group chats, family, errands and everything else competing for our attention, even the things we enjoy can start to feel like commitments when there are too many of them stacked together. You can genuinely want to spend time with someone and still want to spend Friday night alone.
And when that night finally arrives, self-care does not necessarily look like the perfectly curated version we see online.It does not have to be a facial, a mani-pedi or a carefully planned everything shower.&nbsp;
Sometimes taking care of yourself is much less exciting from the outside. It is finally watching the movie you have been saying you will watch “when you have time,” picking up the book you have been dying to finish or ordering the comfort food you have been craving all week and eating it in bed.
Maybe it is putting your phone on Do Not Disturb and letting yourself disappear for a few hours. Maybe it is taking a nap without setting an alarm, replaying an old album, cleaning your room while listening to your favorite playlist or spending an entire evening in clothes you would never be caught dead wearing outside.
None of these things are particularly impressive. That is exactly the point.
We are so used to making our time count that we sometimes forget it is okay for time to simply pass. Not every free afternoon needs to become a productive reset. Not every weekend needs an itinerary. Not every moment alone needs to be turned into an opportunity to improve ourselves.
There is comfort in having nowhere to be and nobody waiting for us to arrive. You can eat when you are hungry, watch what you want, change your mind halfway through and go to bed whenever you feel like it. No one needs an explanation for why you spent three hours doing something completely unimportant.
The older we get, the more valuable that kind of freedom can feel.
We are constantly surrounded by invitations to be somewhere else, whether it is a friend's birthday, a dinner after work, or another event that somehow made its way onto the calendar. It is easy to mistake being constantly surrounded by people for having a full life, when sometimes a full life also needs quiet corners that belong only to you.
That does not mean becoming a hermit or turning down every invitation. It just means letting yourself have a little less noise.
Because your own company really is the best company. You know exactly what you want to watch, what you want to eat and when you want to go home. You do not have to keep a conversation alive or pretend you are not tired. You can be completely yourself because there is no one else to impress.
So the next time a friend cancels, let yourself feel that tiny bit of relief without feeling like a bad friend. You can miss them and still enjoy the night. You can look forward to seeing them next time and still be happy that you get to stay in.
Put the pajamas on. Order your favorite food. Open the book. Press play on the movie.
Maybe you did not need another plan after all.
