Today’s menswear is proving that most of the so-called rules men grew up with were never really rules at all. They were habits and, at times, anxieties. Menswear codes were inherited ideas about what a man should wear and what he should avoid. It existed to limit us to how far we could go before our style started to say something people weren’t ready to hear.&nbsp;These days, those lines look blurrier than ever. A quick look on the runways, on red carpets, at airports, on the streets and especially online, and you’ll see that the old restrictions have crumbled.
Fashion has flirted with the idea of a more fluid menswear wardrobe for years. Designers have sent out skirts, blouses, soft tailoring, pearls, draped tops, ballet flats and bags that once would have been confined to the womenswear floor. Saint Laurent, Loewe, Valentino, Rick Owens and Ludovic de Saint Sernin have all pushed menswear toward something more open, sensual and less tightly policed. But every season, the same question would come up: Is any of this actually real, or is it just runway theater?

Experimental looks that used to live mostly in editorials now show up in everyday celebrity style. And not as a costume, performance or a one-off “fashion moment” either, but actual clothes and accessories being worn in public. A man wearing a purse is no longer there to shock you. Pearl necklaces no longer read like an act of rebellion. Colorful painted nails aren’t an announcement. A sheer shirt isn’t a toxic dare anymore. Even ballet flats, which would have sounded like parody in menswear conversations a few years ago, are starting to show up on men.
Menswear is not just evolving, as we publications love to say every year. It has fully crossed into a different phase. We’re in uncharted territory with the rules going from being challenged to losing authority.
Historically, menswear was built around containment. The modern male wardrobe prized discipline over decoration, as such function and restraint became the goal. Tailoring was the foundation of every look, and from there came a whole vocabulary of correctness. Things had to be kept clean, practical and simple. Men shouldn’t dare over-accessorize or wear anything too soft, too tight, too sheer, too ornate or too feminine. Even when fashion moved forward, menswear often did so in small, acceptable steps like a wider trouser, silk shirt or a necklace. But even then, not too much of one.
It may seem like the pressure was about clothes, but it was really about masculinity. Menswear rules were really social rules, dressed up as style advice. They told men what kind of image was safe to project, and it was a masculine one — in the most traditional sense of the word. Anything outside that framework risked being a joke.

Celebrity style has played a huge role in the shift. When public figures wear pieces that once would have been coded as strictly feminine, they change the visual language for everyone watching. The point is not that celebrities invented this kind of dressing. Fashion, queer culture, club culture, music scenes and countless subcultures have been playing with gender long before luxury brands turned it into a runway statement. But celebrities make things visible at scale. Jacob Elordi can turn niche references into mass imagery.
A man with a handbag barely needs explaining now. Luxury houses saw that change coming and moved quickly, turning their most recognizable bag shapes into objects for everyone. The commercial logic is obvious, but the cultural impact is bigger than sales. Once men start carrying bags that are not limited to backpacks, messenger bags or gym holdalls, the category itself opens up.
The same goes for jewelry. Menswear has long accepted watches, chains and the occasional ring, but diamonds and pearls shifted the mood. Both introduced softness into an area where hardness had usually been the point. A man could look polished, decorative and still feel completely in control of his image.
Sheer shirts have done something similar. They expose the body, but not in the traditional macho way menswear once preferred. In earlier eras of menswear, that kind of lightness would have been considered too feminine, too theatrical or too risky. Today, it can simply be part of a night-out look.
Even painted nails, once treated like a cultural flashpoint every time a famous man wore them, now feel almost ordinary. That ordinariness is important. It means the conversation has moved.
And then there are ballet flats, maybe the clearest sign yet that menswear’s old categories are running out of steam. Footwear means more because it cuts straight through one of fashion’s most deeply-gendered spaces. The accessory tends to reveal where the real boundaries still are. Take a blouse, for example. It can be styled tougher. Jewelry can be rationalized as rock-star dressing. But a ballet flat is harder to explain. Loaded with feminine associations, it’s delicate and graceful, which is exactly why seeing men wear it out in the world feels like a true marker of change.

The internet accelerated all of this. Really, it blew the whole gatekeeping system apart.
Style used to move in a much slower, more hierarchical way. It used to be that editors interpreted the runway and celebrities adopted select pieces. Eventually, some version of the trend made its way into stores.
Everything happens all at once now. A runway look is a TikTok talking point before the show is even over. When a celebrity wears something once, screenshots spread everywhere. A niche styling idea gets rapidly replicated by creators, fans and shoppers across different cities, budgets and body types.
Internet culture has made style more chaotic, but also more democratic. Men are exposed to more references than ever before, from K-pop styling to archival runway looks, queer nightlife dressing, thrifted womenswear, Scandinavian minimalism, balletcore and footballer tunnel fits. Today’s generation of dressers is much less interested in staying in a box.
This rings especially true for younger consumers. A study by Jae Ho Cho and Minsun Lee on genderless fashion in menswear highlights how millennial and Gen Z men responded most positively to styles that felt neutral or subtly blended, rather than overly polarized in either masculine or feminine.
This suggests that men are open to a wider range of expression, but often prefer pieces that feel integrated into their wardrobe. In other words, the shift is real. Though instead of happening through shock value, it’s happening through absorption.
One thing to note, though: Menswear is not becoming womenswear. We’re not abandoning tailoring, shirting, leather jackets, denim or any of the categories that shaped it. We’re just allowing more in.

Again, none of this means every boundary has vanished. There are still markets, audiences and cultural contexts where the old rules hold more power. And there is still a difference between what people admire online and what they feel comfortable wearing themselves. But that gap is shrinking. It becomes part of how men dress now. You don’t need a framework to understand it. A guy in ballet flats and carrying a bag, completely unbothered, already says enough. The styling has left the editorial set and entered real life. These pieces don’t need justification or context anymore.

And that may be the clearest sign that menswear rules are over. Not that every man is suddenly dressing the same way or that everyone is wearing skirts tomorrow. Men can pick from a much broader visual language now. They can wear things once considered off-limits and let the look exist without explanation.
The end of menswear rules won’t cause chaos. It creates freedom, but a more interesting kind of freedom than fashion usually sells. Instead of the fake freedom of endless options with no point of view, a man can finally build his style without constantly checking whether it still qualifies as masculine enough.
