<a href="https://www.hommessingapore.com/watches/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-vacheron-constantin-historiques-222-steel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vacheron Constantin</a>&nbsp;opens a new chapter in its Métiers d’Art Tribute to Great Civilisations collection. Born from the Maison’s partnership with the Louvre, these works of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hommessingapore.com/watches/hublot-daniel-arsham-mp-17-splash-interview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">horological art</a> celebrate four of the most influential cultures of Antiquity.These include the Pharaonic Egypt, the Assyrian Empire, Ancient Greece and Imperial Rome. Each timepiece showcases a historic artefact housed within the Louvre’s vast collections, reproducing them on the dial through the demanding craft of stone glyptics.&nbsp;

Archaeological masterpieces like the bust of Arkhenaten, the Lamassu of King Sargon II, the Athena of Velletri, and The Statue of Tibor are sculpted in relief on a gold base plate using the same material as the original works, namely limestone sandstone and marble sourced from their respective regions.

Surrounding these miniature effigies are appliqué ornamentation and decorative friezes inspired by their respective civilisations. These embellishments further exemplify Vacheron Constantin’s mastery of métiers d’art, bringing together an impressive array of artistic crafts ranging from micro-mosaic and marquetry to enamelling and gold-leaf gilding. Furthermore, every detail is conceived to honour the aesthetic language and cultural achievements of the civilisation it represents, from the symbolic iconography of Ancient Egypt to the architectural grandeur of Imperial Rome.

The absence of traditional watch hands allows the dial to function as a true artistic canvas. Powering each watch is Vacheron Constantin’s self-winding Calibre 2460 G4/2, whose ingenious display system places the indications for hours, minutes, day and date around the periphery. Four rotating discs provide the information through discreet apertures, preserving an uninterrupted view of the dial artworks.

Turning the watch over reveals an oscillating weight engraved with an 18th-century depiction of the Lopuvre’s East façade, a nod to the institution that inspired the collection and the enduring partnership between the museum and the Geneva manufacture since 2019.

By marrying historical scholarship with contemporary horological expertise, the Métiers d’Art Tribute to Great Civilisations collection demonstrates Vacheron Constantin’s unique ability to transform cultural heritage into wearable works of art.
