As Stone Island opens its first boutique in Naples, the brand reflects on its long-standing cultural bond with the city through the documentary &rsquo;A SORPRES, narrated by Roberto Saviano.

There is an anthropology of dressing that escapes the logic of pure retail and settles instead in the folds of collective memory. That is precisely the case with Stone Island and the city of Naples. The opening of the brand&rsquo;s new flagship on Via Filangieri is not simply another store launch, but the closing of a circle that began decades earlier in the legendary Resina market.
The connection is explored in &rsquo;A SORPRES, a documentary directed by Glenn Kitson and narrated by Roberto Saviano. Rather than leaning into nostalgic folklore, the film examines the relationship between the brand and the city as a story of cultural adoption.

Saviano recounts what locals call the &ldquo;Miracle of Resina,&rdquo; the postwar market built around military surplus clothing that, by the 1980s and &rsquo;90s, had become an open-air archive of workwear. Finding a Stone Island piece among the piles of garments was a moment collectors still describe as almost epiphanic.
&ldquo;When you found that particular jacket, that special piece, people in Resina would say, &lsquo;Here it is, the heart of gold,&rsquo;&rdquo; Saviano explains, recalling the long searches through stacks of clothing known as pezze. &ldquo;When you go to Resina, everyone feels like they might stumble upon a discovery.&rdquo;

While the documentary looks backward, the new Naples boutique looks forward. Designed with OMA and its research arm AMO, the 55-square-meter store moves beyond traditional retail. The space feels more like a tactile landscape.
Burnt and sandblasted cork lines the walls, creating a textured, almost volcanic atmosphere interrupted by stainless steel elements and vivid red grilles. Industrial metal panels and aluminum billet lamps designed by Tim Hooijmans reinforce the material experimentation long associated with the brand. Sculptural design pieces such as the Pressure Stools by Tim Teven and functional works by Markus T&ouml;ll further blur the line between design installation and retail space.

The opening continued at the Fondazione Morra, where a dinner brought together members of the brand&rsquo;s community in a setting that blended tradition with experimentation. Among the guests were rapper Marracash and singer Bresh, figures who reflect the brand&rsquo;s cultural reach across different creative worlds.
One of the evening&rsquo;s most symbolic moments appeared on the table settings: a handcrafted statuette of Maradona produced by artisans from San Gregorio Armeno. The football legend was depicted wearing a blue Stone Island jacket, an image that needed little explanation for anyone familiar with Naples&rsquo; mythology.

For CEO Robert Triefus, the energy of Naples has always been naturally aligned with the brand. It is not simply a polite statement, but a recognition of a community that embraced Stone Island long before it became a global phenomenon.

Today, on Via Filangieri, that &ldquo;heart of gold&rdquo; once discovered in the Resina market finally has a permanent home. And yet the elegance of the gesture lies in remembering where the story began, in the dust, the patience, and the thrill of an unexpected find.
