Founded by Kintaro Hattori in Tokyo in 1881, Seiko has spent 145 years creating watches that combine precision, tradition, and timeless design, at some of the most accessible prices in the luxury market. That alone makes its history, forged far from Switzerland, worth a closer look.

Founded 145 years ago in Tokyo by Kintaro Hattori, a young entrepreneur of 22, Seiko draws on this long expertise to create timepieces recognized for their quality, precision, and robustness. Born three years before Breitling and 27 years before Rolex, the brand reflects Hattori’s determination to bring Japanese watchmaking into the modern era imposed by the country’s opening to the United States following the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853–1854. In 1892, building on his success, Hattori took over a factory in the heart of Tokyo and founded Seikosha, specializing in the manufacture of watches and clocks.
Over nearly a century and a half, Seiko has built a history founded on innovation, precision, and a constant desire to stay ahead of its time.
In Japan, excellence is a major art expressed across every discipline, from flower arranging to the tea ceremony, from motorcycles to watches. Tradition and luxury are closely linked there, with an approach to manufacturing that differs from Europe’s. Founded by the young entrepreneur Kintaro Hattori in 1881, Seiko is among the few manufactures capable of competing with the great Swiss houses.

Building on his success, Hattori traveled to America and Europe in 1899 to observe competing companies. On his return, he industrialized Seiko in order to improve production quality and manufacture interchangeable components without further adjustment, following the semi-automated methods he had discovered in the United States.
In 1913, faced with growing competition, Hattori launched the Laurel, Seiko’s first wristwatch, conceived in particular to conquer the American market. Far ahead of its time, it signaled the brand’s ambition to anticipate developments in watchmaking. In 1932, Seiko established its headquarters in Ginza, in the heart of Tokyo.
The Second World War accelerated its development further: a three-hand wristwatch in 1940, its first pocket chronograph in 1941, followed by a marine chronometer made at the request of the Japanese military in 1942. The war caused significant damage to the company, with only the Suwa factory in Nagano Prefecture escaping the bombing.
After the war, Seiko modernized its production facilities with a clear objective: to make watches that were increasingly precise and capable of competing with Swiss production. Engineers worked across every area of watchmaking, improving water resistance, automatic winding, and calendar mechanisms in particular. The results soon followed: in 1958, Seiko won the Japanese chronometry competition with the Marvel.
At the beginning of the 1960s, the brand went up against the best manufactures in the precision competitions held by the observatories of Besançon, Neuchâtel, and Geneva. In five years, it rose from 144th place to first. By the middle of the decade, Seiko had acquired a worldwide reputation for precision and quality, strengthened in Europe by a particularly attractive price-to-quality ratio.
At the same time, from 1963 onward, under the direction of Tsuneya Nakamura, Seiko explored electromechanical and quartz technologies. In 1969, the manufacture launched two major innovations: an automatic chronograph equipped notably with a vertical clutch, and the Astron, the first mass-produced analog quartz watch. Sold for the price of a car, the latter opened the era of the quartz revolution. Once again, Seiko was in step with its time, and even slightly ahead of it.

From quartz to GPS, Seiko has transformed every technological revolution into a new watchmaking adventure.
But as early as 1973, this technology gave way to liquid-crystal displays, also developed by Seiko. This evolution transformed the watch industry: without gear trains, electronic watches could now be produced by electronics manufacturers, whose objective was to increase volumes and lower prices. Seiko, like other watchmakers, nearly suffered as a result. Contrary to a widespread idea, the inventor of quartz was therefore not the gravedigger of mechanical watchmaking. It was above all the electronics manufacturers that threatened watchmakers at the time.

Seiko has since bounced back by integrating all the skills necessary to manufacture its watches, whether quartz, mechanical, or Spring Drive. The manufacture produces, among other things, its own quartz crystals, printed circuits, dials, gear trains, spring and hairspring alloys, as well as synthetic sapphire and rubies.
In 1988, Seiko launched the Kinetic, a quartz movement whose rotor recharges the battery through the movement of the wrist. Eleven years later, the brand took another step forward with Spring Drive, which combines mechanical and quartz technology. Developed over 28 years by engineer Yoshikazu Akahane at the Suwa factory, this movement requires neither a cell nor a battery: energy from the spring powers an electronic system regulated by quartz. Its precision is almost 10 times greater than that of a traditional mechanical movement, with a 72-hour power reserve.
In 2012, Seiko continued this drive for innovation with a new Astron equipped with a low-energy GPS receiver. Able to automatically identify the time zone using GPS signals, the watch adjusts the time by itself across the planet’s 39 time zones. Another demonstration of Seiko’s ability to transform technological advances into watchmaking innovations.

A specialist in precision, Seiko shares with the great Swiss houses a taste for excellence, notably as a timekeeper for international sporting events. But the manufacture also cultivates a deeply Japanese design language, based on the pursuit of simplicity and the functionalist principle that form follows function.
From the tea ceremony to the katana, from temples to traditional clothing, this philosophy permeates Japanese culture. For Seiko, every watch must therefore combine technical innovation, aesthetic refinement, and an emotional dimension.
In 1959, Taro Tanaka, the first graduate designer to join Seiko’s design department, established a true “grammar of Seiko design.” Enriched over the decades, this signature would evolve while retaining its fundamental principles.

Between Japanese tradition, design, and innovation, Seiko celebrates its 145th anniversary with a collection centered on Edo purple.
For its 145th anniversary, Seiko naturally draws from its history. The first commemorative Presage model, the King Seiko KSK1959, takes inspiration from the Timekeeper, a pocket watch created by Kintaro Hattori in 1895 and now preserved at the Seiko Museum in Tokyo. Limited to just 800 pieces, this retro-futuristic piece notably reprises, on its finely guilloché dial, the decoration of the pocket watches conceived by the founder.
Seiko’s attachment to Japanese culture continues with a collection whose dominant color is “Edo purple.” Emerging during the Edo period, from 1603 to 1868, this traditional shade became emblematic of old Tokyo and likewise demonstrates the way Seiko brings together history, culture, and contemporary creation.

For its 145th anniversary, Seiko unveils a series of limited-edition watches inspired by Edo traditions, the creativity of Tokyo, and the celebrated “Edo purple.” A collection faithful to the brand’s philosophy: “Always one step ahead of the others.”
Within the Prospex line, the new Alpinist pays tribute to the Laurel Alpinist of 1959. Its 39.5 mm steel case, water-resistant to 200 meters, houses the automatic calibre 6R55 with a 72-hour power reserve. Its internal compass bezel is operated by a second crown. Limited to 7,000 pieces, it reprises the original design with a new purple dial and a leather strap with mauve stitching.
Chronograph enthusiasts will also find something to enjoy with the Prospex Speedtimer Solar. Its 41.4 mm case, water-resistant to 100 meters, features a sporty purple dial. Limited to 8,000 pieces, it is fitted on a steel bracelet.
The Astron GPS Solar also adopts Edo purple, with a vertically textured dial. A Presage Cocktail Time completes the collection with an “Edo Purple” dial created by Hisashi Kishi, owner of Star Bar and a renowned master bartender in Japan. Its translucent purple tone, golden reflections, and radial pattern highlight a 40.5 mm case powered by the automatic GMT calibre 4R34. Water-resistant to 50 meters and limited to 6,000 pieces, it is priced below €700.
Also worth mentioning is the Rotocall with an Edo purple digital display, limited to 4,000 pieces, as well as the Seiko 5 Sports inspired by the SKX, distinguished by a dark purple dial enhanced with gold accents. Powered by the automatic calibre 4R36, water-resistant to 100 meters, and produced in a run of 9,999 pieces, it retains its sporty spirit while gaining in refinement. Priced below €500, it perfectly illustrates the accessibility that Seiko holds dear.
