The fundamentals of personal finance are hardly ever taught in a classroom. More often, they’re acquired through experience, whether it’s the ability to seek advice before it’s too late, or the realisation that financial security is seldom as solid as it seems. Those lessons came early to Kay Mustaffa, principal and founding member of Singapore-based PrimeVest Kairos Capital VCC. Wealth, he learned, must first be protected before it can be pursued. In an industry often defined by enormous stakes and bold predictions, his understanding of risk has helped shaped an investment philosophy rooted in radical restraint. Reason, not impulse, is his guiding principle.&nbsp;
In this conversation, Mustaffa shares about his investing philosophy, the importance of trust, and why the most powerful investment instinct is knowing when not to act.

What are you like when the suit comes off and the meetings are done?
Quieter than people expect. The version of me at work is decisive because the role demands it, but at home I’m mostly a listener. I read a great deal, often about subjects unrelated to finance — history, the occasional biography, whatever helps me understand why people do what they do. I value quality time with family, usually over meals, and with a close circle of friends who’ve shared life’s ordinary moments with me. I think the suit is a form of discipline, a way of showing respect for other’s people’s time and money. Once it comes off, what remains is someone fairly ordinary, who is curious about the world and tries not to take himself too seriously.
People in finance are trained to project certainty. What has taught you to be more careful with that?
The markets, mostly. Anyone who spends enough time in them learns humility, often the hard way. Certainty can be reassuring, but it’s dangerous to believe wholesale. I’ve seen intelligent people be confidently wrong, and I’ve been wrong myself. What I try to practise today is conviction without arrogance. To hold a clear view while leaving room for the possibility that the world knows something I don’t. I’d rather be honest about uncertainty than sound impressive and be mistaken.
Investor relations are built on trust before numbers. What makes someone trust you with their capital?
Consistency between what I say and what I do. In my experience, trust is rarely won in a single encounter. It’s earned through small moments where you choose the prudent option over the convenient one. I try to be the same person in difficult markets as I am in favourable ones. I tell people what I don’t know as readily as what I do. And I never involve someone else’s capital in our own ambition. People can feel the difference between being sold to and genuine alignment. Over time, that is what builds trust.
How do you have genuine conversations with ultra-high-net-worth individuals who’ve heard every pitch imaginable?
By not pitching. The people I speak with can detect a performance instantly. So I do the opposite. I explain things in layman’s terms, avoid excessive jargon, acknowledge the limitations of what we do, and I’m comfortable saying that a particular approach may not be right for them. Honesty is oddly disarming precisely because it is so uncommon. I find that when you’re willing to talk someone out of something, they start to believe you when you explain what actually works.

What kind of investor do you learn most from?
The sceptical ones. The investors who look beyond headline numbers and want to truly understand the underlying mechanisms. I have learned the most from people who are not easily impressed, because they make me more discerning and force me to articulate ideas I may not have fully examined myself. The agreeable investor is pleasant, but the demanding one makes you better. I have deep respect for anyone who approaches their own capital with that level of care and seriousness.
Your fund charges performance fee only above a hurdle rate and uses a high-water mark.
It reflects a simple principle: that we should be rewarded for creating real value, and not just for being present. A hurdle rate ensures investors receive a defined return before we earn a performance fee, while a high-water mark prevents a manager from being paid twice for simply recovering previous losses. Together, those mechanisms put manager and investor on the same side of the table: we do well only when they do well, not before. To me, a fee structure reveals more about a manager’s character than any presentation ever could. Ours is designed such that fairness is built into the architecture, rather than left to goodwill.
There is also no lock-up period despite the fund being positioned for mid- to long-term investors. Trust shouldn’t have to be enforced by contract. We’re candid with the fact that this is a strategy for patient investors, and I’d rather people stay because they’re disciplined rather than being forced to by some legal constraint. Removing the lock-up creates healthy accountability. We must continue earning the relationship, not just secure it at the outset. To us, there’s a quiet dignity in giving investors the freedom to leave if they choose. In my experience, that flexibility often strengthens commitment rather than weakens it.
Algorithms are logical while people are emotional. How do you reassure investors when the model makes a call they’re uncomfortable with?
I bring the conversation back to first principles. Discomfort usually arises when the model reaches a conclusion that’s at odds with prevailing market sentiment — staying invested when fear is dominant, or reducing exposure when optimism becomes excessive. In those moments, my role isn’t to defend the algorithm, but to explain the principle behind it. The model is there to introduce consistency, reduce behavioural bias and prevent decisions — including my own — from becoming hostage to the emotion of the day. I never dismiss an investor’s concerns — which are entirely human and valid — but I try to frame it through a broader lens of governance. What may feel counterintuitive in the moment is often precisely where a disciplined investment framework earns its value. That said, the model can inform the decision, but the final choice always rests with the investor.

When you think about the next stage of your career, what do you hope people will say you helped build beyond a fund?
I hope they’ll say we helped raise the standard for how this work is done in our part of the world: through rigour, honesty and quiet excellence. A fund is ultimately just a vehicle. What matters is the culture built around it. I’d like us to contribute to institutions that outlast any individual, and to a community of investors, partners and younger talents who hold themselves to the same standards. If one day people say PrimeVest Kairos Capital helped redefine how serious capital is managed in this region, and did so with integrity, that would mean far more than any figure on a factsheet.
Beyond the fund, you’ve spoken about building a community. Tell us about Le Cercle.
Le Cercle by PrimeVest Kairos Capital is something we’ve wanted to build for some time: an invitation-only circle for individuals who think seriously about capital preservation, culture and legacy. It’s deliberately not a marketing exercise, nor a platform to sell anything. It is, in essence, a space for conversations among peers who rarely have the opportunity to speak freely and thoughtfully with one another. We are quietly introducing it and letting it grow through invitations, trust and shared values rather than scale. If it becomes what we hope it to be, Le Cercle with stand as a lasting community of ideas, one aligned with the spirit of PrimeVest Kairos Capital yet with its own identity.
You work across several ventures. How do they fit together?
They’re different expressions of the same instinct: to build with intention, discipline and care. PrimeVest Kairos Capital applies those principles to institutional investing through a frameworks centred on rigour, stewardship and long-term perspective. Fundtir reflects the same interest in governance, structure and cross-border stewardship. MLCA, our creative agency, exists because we believe ideas deserve to be communicated with the same care with which they’re conceived. Its philosophy is simple: “Make it work.” Each serves a different purpose, yet share the same temperament: patience, precision and a refusal to cut corners. We’ve never been interested in building for scale alone. What matters is building a consistent way of working across everything we do.
