There&rsquo;s a reason the henley keeps coming back every few years. It does something most basics can&rsquo;t: it makes an outfit look cool without looking like you tried too hard. More dressed up than a plain T-shirt and less formal than a polo, the henley lives in that sweet spot modern menswear keeps circling back to.
Originally dating back to the 19th-century as an undergarment, the style eventually became associated with rowers in Henley-on-Thames, the English town that gave the shirt its name. Over time, it evolved into one of those reliable wardrobe pieces celebrities, stylists, and menswear guys always seem to return to.
Now, it&rsquo;s showing up everywhere again&mdash;from street style outside the shows in Milan to soft, layered looks all over TikTok. The trick is knowing how to wear one without drifting into &ldquo;thermal pajama top&rdquo; territory.
Start with darker colors: If you&rsquo;re buying your first henley, skip bright white for now. Black, charcoal, washed brown, olive, or navy instantly feel sharper and more wearable. White henleys can work, but they&rsquo;re harder to style and can lean a little too undershirt-adjacent if the fabric is thin.
Pay attention to the fit: The best henleys sit close to the body without clinging to it. Too oversized, and it starts to look sloppy. Too tight, and suddenly you&rsquo;re in 2014 gym-core territory. A slightly relaxed fit with structure in the shoulders usually works best.
Leave a few buttons undone: The neckline is the whole point. Keeping one or two buttons open gives the shirt a more relaxed, confident feel. Fully buttoned henleys tend to look overly stiff, especially with casual outfits.
Choose fabrics carefully: Texture changes everything here. Waffle-knit henleys feel casual and rugged, ribbed versions lean more fitted and nightlife-ready, while cotton-linen blends are ideal for warmer weather.
Keep the pants relaxed: Since most henleys already sit fairly close to the body, pair them with straight-leg denim, relaxed trousers, or loose pleated pants instead of skinny jeans. The contrast in silhouette keeps the outfit feeling current.
The best thing about the henley is that it gives off a rugged, slightly nostalgic vibe&mdash;and it&rsquo;s somehow always flattering when styled properly. In a moment where menswear keeps moving toward pieces that feel easy but still intentional, the henley makes perfect sense.
