The Cartier Santos-Dumont returns with subtle refinements that honour its pioneering spirit while embracing contemporary elegance.

The iconic Cartier Santos-Dumont needs no introduction, but for the uninitiated, it was designed by Louis Cartier as the first purpose-built men’s wristwatch in 1904. At a time when men relied entirely on pocket watches, Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont needed a way to tell the time mid-flight without taking his hands off the controls of his aircraft. Louis Cartier solved the problem by creating a flat, square-cased watch that could be securely strapped to the wrist with a leather band.The original design featured a distinctive square bezel, legible Roman numerals, exposed screws that paid homage to the structural elements of the Eiffel Tower, and a striking blue cabochon. In the years that followed, Cartier’s wealthy clientele began requesting their own versions after spotting the watch on Santos-Dumont’s wrist during his record-breaking flights. The Maison officially introduced the model to the public in 1911, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward to today, and while the Cartier Santos collection has evolved into two equally beloved families — Santos de Cartier and Cartier Santos-Dumont — the latter remains the purest expression of the original 1904 design. For Watches and Wonders this year, Cartier introduces a series of subtle yet meaningful updates. “The new Santos-Dumont emphasises its resemblance to the original shape, and the bracelet, at once fluid and precious, is an expression of contemporary elegance,” says Pierre Rainero, Cartier’s Director of Image, Style and Heritage.Among its most notable additions is the gilded obsidian dial, which brings an extra layer of intrigue to the already captivating timepiece. The LM-size watch centres on a delicate dial crafted from volcanic stone sourced from Mexico. Its iridescent reflections, created by naturally trapped air bubbles, ensure that no two watches are exactly alike. Measuring just 0.3mm in thickness, the material is as delicate as glass. Once cut, it is meticulously polished to reveal its luminous depth and remarkable radiance.

Referencing the flexibility of the Maison’s first made-to-measure metal watch bracelets from the 1920s, the yellow gold bracelet is infinitely delicate and feels silky smooth against the skin. This is achieved through links measuring just 1.15mm in thickness, forming a supple mesh composed of 15 rows and an impressive total of 394 individual links. Powering the watch is Cartier’s 430 MC hand-wound mechanical manufacture movement, an ultra-thin calibre that allows the Santos-Dumont to maintain its slim profile while delivering reliable precision.Alongside the steel model with its gilded obsidian dial, the collection also introduces two new LM-size references in yellow gold and a bi-metal combination of gold and steel, both featuring silvered satin-finish dials.
