The birth of pr&ecirc;t-&agrave;-porter

Haute couture, as we know, has always been the highest expression of craftsmanship and creativity in the fashion industry. It is synonymous with exclusive garments bearing a special sartorial allure, handmade by skilled tailors and craftsmen with fine fabrics and elaborate details. However, all of this was only accessible to a small circle of privileged elite. In the 50s and 60s, overseas, pr&ecirc;t-&agrave;-porter was born, introducing a new concept of clothing: ready-to-wear, more accessible, and innovative garments.

Although the term pr&ecirc;t-&agrave;-porter (French for "ready-to-wear") was coined in the United States in 1948, the consecration of this new form of clothing took place in France during the 60s. In Paris, the famous French designer Yves Saint Laurent brought it to the catwalk for the first time. In Italy, this trend arrived in 1971, when Walter Albini chose Milan as the venue for the first fashion show of his pr&ecirc;t-&agrave;-porter line at the historic headquarters of the Societ&agrave; del Giardino in Palazzo Spinola, thus initiating the first Milan Fashion Week.
