As the old adage goes, one's trash is another's treasure.

The fashion industry's notorious waste problem has driven brands, homespun and luxury alike, to explore how they can turn existing material into new pieces. Arguably the most notable example: Italian house Miu Miu, which announced in October 2020 the launch of an exclusive capsule featuring 80 upcycled, one-off dresses, refashioned from antique garments. There's also Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, who recently launched the collection Made in Britain, crafted entirely out of leftover fabrics from previous seasons. While young designers like Emily Adams Bode and Gabriela Hearst have been repurposing old textiles for years, to watch major labels embrace the practice has sparked a notable shift in its perception. After all, consumers have been proven to increasingly repel wasteful behaviour. So is upcycling trendy? Yes, but more importantly, it's necessary.
