Taking inspiration from a deeply personal experience, designer RJ Santos’s latest collection explored what happens in between endings and beginnings through colorful details, tactile textures, and playful silhouettes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

There's a curious question that has intrigued human imagination since time immemorial: Where does life begin, and where does it end? And somewhere in between, is there a place where those who have left us and those about to enter our lives meet and talk to each other? For&nbsp;RJ Santos, the name behind Randolf, this question takes place in his new collection, The Waiting Room — an imagined place between life and the afterlife, neither heaven nor purgatory, but a place of its own.&nbsp;

For his sophomore appearance at MNL Fashion Week, the designer shared with L'Officiel Philippines that he already had a developed concept coming from his debut last year; however, life intervened in a way that changed the course of the collection. Last January, Santos and his family experienced both loss and a new beginning: the passing of his grandfather, followed by the birth of his niece.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Caught between the emotions of this life event, the designer found himself reconsidering what he wanted to show in his collection this year. “A few months after that, this idea of both of them meeting somewhere — not in heaven, not in purgatory — but like in a special place, has always been playing in my mind,” Santos shared. “Thinking about what their interaction would be like led me to develop this collection.”&nbsp;

That idea became The Waiting Room, an undefined space where those who left can encounter those who are about to arrive. As the designer described it, it’s a temporary haven where the two souls can interact, reconnect, and perhaps prepare each other on what comes next. This concept materialized on the runway through an operation-room door, from which each model emerged into this suspended world. Rather than drawing a line between life and death, the collection allows the two states to coexist

But while the premise sounds heavy, Santos was never interested in making the collection feel sombre and solemn. “The prints and the execution will still be fun, and will still be Randolf," he explained. “It's still not so serious. It's still going to be how we are, even if it's more on the serious ‘yung pinagkukuhaan namin.”

This spirit is evident on the clothing, with the designer doubling down on the brand’s playful and vibrant sensibilities rather than tempering them through layered textures, hand-drawn imagery, collage-like prints, unexpected fabrications, and his signature eclectic color blocking.&nbsp;

Looking closer at the pieces, details like printed flowers, childlike illustrations, and even dogs playing among blooms — which is an homage to departed pets — lent the imagined waiting room a warmth that feels more like a repository of memories than a solemn passage.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Flowers, in particular, became one of the collection’s main motifs. For Santos, they offered a natural way to symbolize the circle of life with their consistent presence throughout the many milestones in life. “With flowers, you always have them on different occasions or different stages in your life,” he mused. “When someone gives birth, people give them flowers. It's always present until we die.”&nbsp;

Beyond that, the motif is also personal to the designer, as he recalled his fascination with flowers growing up — even sharing how he still has photos of watering their garden. For The Waiting Room, while the designer did revisit his interest in flowers, he pushed it forward into something less immediately recognizable, experimenting with how it could be drawn, constructed, and translated, showing in textured patterns, collaged prints, and bag accessories.&nbsp;
“We’re trying to explore different fabrications because I don't want it to look like what we usually do,” he noted. " So, even if the prints are flowers, I'm trying to make it look like it's not flowers.”

The desire to reimagine the familiar also shaped The Waiting Room’s visual language, as this collection became more textural than Santos’ previous works. This is reflected through unexpected textile pairings, from denim woven into delicate tulle and lace to tactile embellishments ranging from sequins, beads, and paillettes to embroidered patches and three-dimensional floral accents. The juxtaposition between delicacy and weight, softness and structure, mirrors the collection’s contemplation of life and death, with each piece embodying the fragments of memories that inspired the collection.&nbsp;

More than that, these details represent the emotional place the designer is coming from, sharing, “Deep inside, this is what I really wanted to do right now kasi mas malakas yung emotions.” What started as a significant moment in his life ultimately became the heart of the collection, turning those feelings into clothes, images, and ideas that make up his collection for MNL Fashion Week 2026.

For an artist who sees his collection as interconnected chapters, The Waiting Room feels more like a departure than a natural continuation of Randolf’s story — and perhaps that is what makes it feel so fitting. Even if he switched up his original concept, Santos remained rooted in the same curiosity, memory, and instinct to transform what he feels into clothes. In the end, his new collection becomes an exploration of the moments that exist between endings and beginnings, imagining loss and new life not as opposites, but as parts of the same story.&nbsp;
