The French Maison taps the playful and enigmatic Chinese contemporary artist for their Women&rsquo;s Pre-Fall Collection.

Nicolas Ghesqui&egrave;re of Louis Vuitton is always on the cusp of creating something new. The Artistic Director for Women&rsquo;s Collections debuted the Maison&rsquo;s first-ever Voyager Show in Shanghai last month and unveiled a fun and sprightly collaboration with contemporary artist Sun Yitian. The collection is a bold and youthful statement for the French House and shows the brand&rsquo;s continued support for visionary artists with a distinct point-of-view. In the past, Louis Vuitton has collaborated with the likes of Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Prince&mdash;Yitian being the latest collaborator to share her imaginative vision for the brand.

&ldquo;The connection between paintings on a canvas and the viewer is somewhat static and silent, a form of observation with a certain distance. However, when my artworks are translated into clothing, bags, or perfumes, they become much closer to people, and this interaction is lively and unpredictable. It creates an equal relationship of use,&rdquo; says Sun Yitian.

The 33-year-old artist, who lives and works in Beijing, has always tackled the tricky tension between &ldquo;Pop Art&rdquo; and mass production, exploring the &ldquo;Made in China&rdquo; narrative through her hyper-realistic paintings of mundane objects and bringing that aesthetic into high profile galleries and museums. For this collaboration, both the artist and the Maison worked closely together to bring Yitian&rsquo;s works to life with a touch of creative savoir faire. The process then resulted in the creation of seven toy-like animal motifs that are seen throughout the collection&rsquo;s garments and accessories. Whether that be a leopard grinning on a petal pink coat or skirt or a a cartoony pink rabbit-shaped leather purse, these unmistakable animals are this pre-fall season&rsquo;s signature imprints for the Maison.

A new term also emerged through the creation of the collection. &lsquo;Animogram&rsquo; is how Louis Vuitton describes its signature silhouettes reinterpreted with Yitian&rsquo;s adorable animals. Each key shape is paired with the artist&rsquo;s exclusive zoological design&mdash;like the Alma in Epi calfskin with a zebra motif or the On The Go tote with a duck peeking through the corner. But not all of Yitian&rsquo;s animals are emblazoned on the bags itself, some also appear as statement leather accessories (like coin purses and key holders) on icons like the No&eacute;. New to the entire line-up of leather offerings is the Mini Square Trunk, a charming addition to the Maison&rsquo;s trunk silhouettes, this design comes with either a spotted dog on the corner or a bold orange leopard. The Animogram also goes beyond the Maison&rsquo;s leather accessories and can be seen on the LV Archlight sneakers, Monogram nylon mules, and even the Carr&eacute; 90 scarf.

To make the collaboration even more special, the Maison extended Yitian&rsquo;s designs as charms and fun packaging on three iconic perfumes: Spell on You, Imagination, and Heures d&rsquo;Absence. Never before have Louis Vuitton perfumes been adorned with playful decors, but the choice seems fitting to fully realize Ghesqui&egrave;re&rsquo;s Voyager vision. After all, beauty and fashion go hand-in-hand.

The collection as a whole is a visual fantasy and undeniably brings out one&rsquo;s inner child through Yitian&rsquo;s tongue-in-cheek creations. These comical animals rendered with wit and playfulness will forever be etched as one of Louis Vuitton&rsquo;s most memorable artistic partnerships.
