On a cool February morning in Milan, Rocio Zobel prepares for what will become another long day maneuvering through the charged circuit of fashion week. The schedule reads like a map of the industry&rsquo;s inner workings: showroom visits, dinners, brand events, and runway shows that blur into one another across one of fashion&rsquo;s storied capitals.
Zobel had attended a gilded Gucci gathering the night before, held in an expansive Milanese residence&mdash;a kind of setting that fashion houses reserve for their most intimate gatherings. But she barely had time to take it all in. &ldquo;I literally walked in, went around the house to discover each room because it was super cool,&rdquo; she recalls. &ldquo;And when dinner started, I had to leave, because I had a meeting.&rdquo; This meeting, however, was different. Between appearances at fashion week events, Zobel stepped away to speak with her team in Manila about the launch of CALA, her upcoming label. Like many of the invitees attending these events, Zobel made a career out of her individuality and in her case, lifestyle, which she has generously contributed to the cloisters of fashion. In many ways, the moment neatly captures the dual nature of the young tastemaker&rsquo;s distinct resum&eacute;&mdash;on one hand, a beholder of fashion&rsquo;s grand spectacle and on the other, an architect in her own right.

For Zobel, fashion week is less about being seen and more about learning how luxury works at its highest level. &ldquo;I think the attention they give their clients is really interesting,&rdquo; she says of the brands hosting these events. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve come to fashion week before with other brands, and the way they take care of their clients is incredible.&rdquo; There is an undeniable glamour to the social calculus behind fashion week invitations, but Zobel approaches them like field research. &ldquo;Picking up little pieces from each event is so helpful,&rdquo; she explains. &ldquo;Obviously, the scale of these events is huge, but there are definitely things you can apply to your own brand, especially when it comes to elevating the experience for the buyer.&rdquo;
Confidence is required to move fluidly through these rarefied spaces. But confidence is no stranger to Zobel. Like many of the invitees she now encounters at fashion week, she has successfully governed a following around a distinct personal sensibility. Her online presence&mdash;equal parts fashion diary, travelogue, and lifestyle chronicle&mdash;has attracted a growing audience drawn to her instinctive approach to dressing and simply, living.
A scroll through her social media rings like a visual scrapbook: snapshots from the corners of New York City&rsquo;s hoi polloi, parasol-lined holidays in Capri, shadowy evenings against the Pyramids of Giza, and blurry glimpses of runways. The images capture a life clad in the most vibrant of colors and unapologetic patterns that rarely go unnoticed. But Zobel&rsquo;s relationship with fashion began long before the runway invitations.

Born to I&ntilde;igo and Maricris Zobel, she is the youngest of five siblings. The arrangement meant her childhood unfolded a little differently than most. &ldquo;I was basically home alone growing up,&rdquo; she says, laughing. The considerable age gaps between her and her siblings left her with an unusual kind of playground: her mother&rsquo;s wardrobe. &ldquo;She had a lot of vintage pieces and a lot of color,&rdquo; Zobel remembers. &ldquo;My mom takes a lot of risks in fashion, and I think risk is one of the most important things that separates people stylistically.&rdquo;
For a young Rocio, the closet was a universe of possibilities. Dresses, handbags, and accessories became props in a childhood game of experimentation. &ldquo;It always felt like this incredible world,&rdquo; she says. The calling unveiled itself early. &ldquo;I found a letter I wrote to myself when I was around 11 saying, &lsquo;Hi future [Rocio], you&rsquo;re probably [working] in fashion right now,&rsquo;&rdquo; she recalls fondly. One of her earliest memories in dressing up involves a Louis Vuitton Neverfull tote belonging to her mother. Released in 2007, the bag has since become one of the house&rsquo;s most recognizable pieces&mdash;a structured yet capacious carryall in Louis Vuitton&rsquo;s signature monogram canvas. &ldquo;She let me borrow it one weekend,&rdquo; Zobel recalls. &ldquo;I remember stuffing everything I possibly could into it and feeling so cool carrying it around. I even took it to lunch in my own house just so I could wear it.&rdquo;

Today, the anecdote remains charming as it does whimsical, but it also reveals something essential about Zobel&rsquo;s philosophy of style: fashion, at its core, should not feel like work but rather, play. That spirit still guides her being and her wardrobe today. Zobel gravitates naturally toward bold combinations&mdash;defiant patterns, silk headscarves tied just so, and unexpected pairings of oversized long sleeves with breezy resortwear that render even the simplest garments unmistakably her own. &ldquo;I always try to steer toward patterns and color,&rdquo; she says.&nbsp;
The ability to develop these strong instincts was shaped by geography as much as upbringing. After finishing boarding school, Zobel eventually moved to New York City to study fashion design and photography at Parsons School of Design. The move proved transformative. &ldquo;I resonate [the most] with New York City for sure,&rdquo; she says, having lived there for six years.
For many young creatives, New York City is a rite of passage&mdash;a required exodus for identity test runs. The city&rsquo;s streets pave a concrete lab where experimentation is not just accepted but heavily encouraged. &ldquo;You see everything there,&rdquo; Zobel says. &ldquo;From crazy colorful pieces to people wearing full leather looks on the sidewalk. That environment gives you the freedom to explore your identity.&rdquo; During those years, she cycled through countless stylistic eras&mdash;each one informing the next. &ldquo;I think I went through the most [phases] of fashion there,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;And that was really fun.&rdquo; If New York City taught her experimentation, returning to Manila has reinforced something else: perspective. &ldquo;In the Philippines, we tend to prioritize comfort, which I love,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;But traveling reminds me to bring identity and creativity into everyday dressing.&rdquo; Her wardrobe often reflects that intersection of influences. Resort silhouettes, commanding gold pendant necklaces, and kaleidoscopic bursts of color appear frequently in her compositions, which seemingly echo the tropical ease of the Philippines itself. Yet despite her worldly exposure, Zobel&rsquo;s connection to her roots remains a touchstone for her. During our conversation, her affection for the Philippines surfaces easily&mdash;especially when discussing the vision behind CALA, the brand she will soon introduce to the world.

The name itself carries personal meaning. CALA is derived from Calatagan, the location of her family&rsquo;s farm, where Zobel spent much of her childhood among the land and its offerings. &ldquo;I love being there,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Being in nature, being with my family&mdash;it&rsquo;s always been a big part of my life.&rdquo; The brand draws inspiration from that environment, translating elements of the best the Philippines has to offer into wearable pieces.&nbsp;
Zobel is equally interested in how Filipino culture can inform the experience of fashion itself. Clothing, though central, is only part of a larger sensory composition. The atmosphere of an event&mdash;the food, the setting, the gestures of hospitality&mdash;can hold as much meaning as the garments themselves. Through these details, she hopes to weave the nuances of Filipino culture into moments that feel both personal and distinctly rooted in place.
For Zobel, the goal is not simply to design clothing but to create an atmosphere. &ldquo;I want people to recognize the Philippines,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;When people talk about swimwear brands, they always say Brazil. I&rsquo;d love for someone to see my brand and think about the Philippines the same way.&rdquo; That ambition sits at the center of CALA&rsquo;s identity. The brand is scheduled to launch later this year, and Zobel approaches the project with visible excitement. Even while attending events abroad, she finds herself returning mentally to the details of the upcoming release. &ldquo;Right before the Gucci event, I was on a call with my team talking about the launch,&rdquo; she says. The fashion week invitations, it turns out, are merely one chapter in a much larger story.&nbsp;

Today, Zobel describes herself as entering a new phase of confidence&mdash;not just in fashion but in creativity as a whole. &ldquo;I feel like right now I&rsquo;m having the most fun,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Because I&rsquo;m the most confident in my style.&rdquo; The confidence she refers to is not rooted in attention or validation. Instead, it emerges from the quiet certainty of knowing who she is. &ldquo;You know how, as girls, the first thing we do is text someone asking what they&rsquo;re wearing?&rdquo; she laughs. &ldquo;Now I just wear what I want.&rdquo; The shift might sound small, but it voices a fundamental change in her approach. Fashion, after all, moves in cycles. Trends ebb and flow; aesthetics evolve; garments acquire new definitions as time wears on. But at the end of the day, the wearer dictates their own world.
Authenticity, Zobel believes, is the only constant worth preserving. &ldquo;You can be colorful one day, girly the next, and punk the next,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;You don&rsquo;t have to stick to one style forever, as long as it feels true to you.&rdquo; Soon, with the launch of CALA, Zobel will begin building a world shaped by that philosophy. For now, she continues to observe, travel, and absorb the lessons fashion has to offer. Between dinners, runway shows, and brand events, she studies the details&mdash;the centerpieces of the tables, the garments that drape the runway, the choreography of luxury. One day soon, she will translate those lessons into experiences of her own. And like the outfits she chooses each day, they will begin with the same essential ingredient: confidence.
