We speak to Imma Colarina about her fledgling brand's interesting new drop.

High up on the tree of keywords leading IMMA&rsquo;s latest collection are &ldquo;oddity&rdquo;, &ldquo;self-acceptance&rdquo;, and &ldquo;alien&rdquo;, the last referring to minds being shaped by the individual worlds they live in. &ldquo;I thought about&hellip;creative people whose ideas and perspectives are not taken seriously or seen as &lsquo;weird&rsquo;, when, in my opinion, there&rsquo;s no such thing as weird,&rdquo; Imma Colarina, the brand&rsquo;s founder and designer muses. &ldquo;People just grow up in different environments and are molded by different experiences, thus the differences in perspective.&rdquo;

And perspective is at the root of everything Colarina does &mdash; it&rsquo;s also what kickstarted her eponymous label, now a new insider favorite, and its look. Coaxed by a mentor towards conceptual design, she realized that making wearable art was the path for her. Zoom into the LN Series, IMMA&rsquo;s current line, to find interesting layers and seaming that are off-kilter but never haphazard &mdash; every stitch is well thought out, deliberate, and storied.

The moon, representing introspection and enlightenment, is the collection&rsquo;s setting. Colarina shares that she took inspiration from a short story she read years ago: &ldquo;The protagonist in the story is someone from the moon, and this became one of the major concepts for the collection. The man on the moon is described as someone who looks similar to people on the Earth but is actually molded differently, having grown up on the moon.&rdquo; Think The Little Prince, but fashion-forward, deconstructed, fresh.

&ldquo;The cuts, seams, and shapes are my attempt at translating the story&rsquo;s scenes into garments. The jeans seem similar to any pair of regular denim pants, but are actually made to stand out, provoke, and surprise with smaller details. [It&rsquo;s] like how the man from the moon seems fairly average, but actually has quirks not often present in a person. He&rsquo;s unusual, but that isn't a bad thing.&rdquo;

That said, working with denim, arguably the most egalitarian of fabrics, was a nod to common bonds. &ldquo;Almost everybody owns at least one denim piece in their closet. It gives a friendly tone to unusual and potentially overwhelming silhouettes&hellip;A pair of jeans is common and familiar,&rdquo; she says. &rdquo;[Reinterpreting] it with twists and new details&hellip;[shows] possibilities outside what we know as universally beautiful.&rdquo;

Colarina&rsquo;s hope for her fledgling label? &ldquo;IMMA was initially a menswear brand. I wanted to add more adventurous and experimental options to the limited men&rsquo;s selections in the market&hellip;hopefully soon, we&rsquo;ll see more men interested in donning unconventional pieces on a normal day.&rdquo;

Not one to submit to the status quo, Colarina thinks every niche matters. &ldquo;I feel like when I reach people through my work, and they follow or buy from the brand, I know that what I&rsquo;m trying to convey reaches them and they can relate to the message, even subconsciously. &ldquo;Oh, these are my people!&rdquo; is my initial reaction. I want my work to reach my target audience, no matter how minor the subculture is&hellip;I want IMMA to be a prominent brand that either disturbs or brings joy to the audience and the industry.&rdquo;
