John Galliano: Horizons was set to be the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition. One month after its announcement, the exhibition will no longer go ahead as planned. Here’s what happened.

In July, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced John Galliano: Horizons as the Costume Institute’s Spring 2027 exhibition.
A month later, the exhibition is no longer going ahead as planned.
The Met and Galliano announced the decision on August 31, with the museum confirming that details of a new Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will be announced at a later date.
The decision comes after criticism surrounding the choice to honor Galliano, whose career spans four decades and includes some of fashion’s most influential collections, as well as the controversy that led to his departure from Dior in 2011.
Here’s what we know so far.
<h3 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">John Galliano: Horizons</h3>
John Galliano: Horizons was set to cover roughly four decades of the designer’s career, from his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduate collection through his work at Givenchy and Christian Dior and, later, Maison Margiela.
The exhibition was planned to bring together garments, accessories, sketches, research books and archival material, offering a look at both his finished work and the process behind it.
It would have also marked a notable moment for the Costume Institute. Galliano would have been only the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at the Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.
The exhibition was intended to look at the full span of Galliano’s career, including the period following the events of 2011.
<h3 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">The Controversy Surrounding Galliano</h3>
In 2011, videos emerged of Galliano making antisemitic and racist remarks in Paris.
He was dismissed as Dior’s creative director and convicted by a French court over the remarks.
Galliano later entered treatment for addiction before returning to fashion. In 2014, he was appointed creative director of Maison Margiela, where he remained until 2024.
His work at the house marked a new period in his career and brought him back into the fashion spotlight, but his return did not erase the events of 2011, which continued to be discussed alongside his work.
That history was also going to be addressed in Horizons. The Met had said the exhibition would look at the “full arc” of his career rather than leave out the period following the controversy.
The announcement nevertheless drew criticism from Jewish community leaders and others who questioned the decision to give Galliano a solo exhibition.
The timing of the 2027 Met Gala also became part of the conversation, with the event expected to fall around Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.
<h3 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">Galliano's Statement</h3>
On August 31, Galliano released a statement explaining his decision to postpone the exhibition “at this time.”

He acknowledged the people affected by his past actions, writing:

“I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.”

Galliano also wrote that atonement is not something achieved through an exhibition or a single public gesture, but rather “a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one’s conduct over time.”
He said he did not want the discussion surrounding him to place the Met in a difficult position or distract from the work of the Costume Institute.
“I also recognize and respect that an exhibition honoring my work would be painful for some,” he said.

Max Hollein, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, described the decision as a joint one.

The 2027 Met Gala will still take place, but it will no longer be tied to John Galliano: Horizons.
The Met has confirmed that a new Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala theme will be announced at a later date.
