Before building an internationally recognised jewelry label, Davidson worked in agriculture. It was a trip to South Africa that unexpectedly changed everything.&nbsp;<span aria-hidden="true" class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchor"></span>"I was inspired. I took a trip to South Africa. It was my first big international trip," Davidson tells <em>L'Officiel Philippines</em>. "I've always been drawn to different cultures and places around the world."</p>
<p data-start="1700" data-end="1831">While exploring Cape Town, he stumbled upon a bracelet in a local market that would become the catalyst for an entirely new career.&nbsp;"I found a bracelet in a market in Cape Town. And I brought that back to Calgary where I was living at the time. And I made several designs. And I started selling them. And that kind of was the very beginning of the whole business."&nbsp;From there, Davidson immersed himself in silversmithing, launched his first collection, and eventually relocated to Toronto before expanding into New York. What began as a single travel souvenir evolved into a globally recognised jewelry house rooted in exploration. Today, every Dean Davidson collection is still shaped by that same curiosity.</p>

<p data-start="2523" data-end="3023" class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer">"Travel and exploration is really the foundation of the brand. That's where we find our inspiration," Davidson explains. "Every year, we visit a different country around the world. And then we just take in the architecture, the people, the culture, the colors... We'll find one central kind of point and then expand that into a full assortment of jewelry. We love travelling, we love experiencing the world. And so to be able to create this beautiful product out of that has really been a dream."<span aria-hidden="true" class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchor"></span></p>
<p data-start="3025" data-end="3232">That global perspective extends beyond inspiration into production itself. Davidson first encountered his now-signature brushed finish while in Paris before tracing the technique to master artisans in India. "I found a manufacturer in India, in Ahmedabad... and that was the very first factory I ever worked with. Then we expanded that into another family-owned factory in Jaipur. That has kind of been the foundation of our manufacturing for the last 10 years."</p>
<p data-start="3492" data-end="3610">Today, the brand works across India and Thailand, embracing the strengths each region has cultivated over generations. "We do a lot of our gemstone work in India and a lot of our metal pieces are done in Thailand... Those are two hubs of jewelry manufacturing in the world."</p>

<p data-start="3771" data-end="4171" class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer">Those long-standing partnerships are central to what makes Dean Davidson feel distinctly personal. Every design begins as a hand sketch in the Toronto studio before being realised by family-run workshops that preserve centuries-old techniques, from meticulously hand-cut gemstones to the brand's unmistakable brushed finish. <span aria-hidden="true" class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchor"></span></p>
<p data-start="4173" data-end="4356">For <strong>Fernando Fontineles</strong>, Wholesale Director of Dean Davidson, the collections are defined by three qualities that have remained consistent throughout the brand's fifteen-year history. "There's three words actually often used to describe it. It's timeless, sculptural and empowering."&nbsp;He explains that while trends inevitably come and go, Dean Davidson's designs are created from ideas rather than seasonal aesthetics.&nbsp;"The designs are not trend focused... They're very timeless. We see customers coming in with pieces that they bought at the beginning of his career, 15 years ago, wearing with styles that they purchased at the latest launch. And they look so beautiful together."</p>
<p data-start="4862" data-end="4993">The sculptural quality comes from carefully considering proportion and form, while the emotional connection is just as intentional.&nbsp;"We want women to feel empowered. Most of our customers... say, 'I wear this piece when I want to feel confident. I'm going into a big meeting or I'm going on a job interview... and I feel that they give me that feeling of power.'"&nbsp;That commitment to craftsmanship is equally evident behind the scenes. Fontineles points to India's gemstone artisans, whose expertise has been refined over generations. "It takes about three and a half hours to create that checkerboard pattern on a stone," he says. "It's really a cultural thing that they take so much pride in and they do such beautiful work."&nbsp;Meanwhile, Thailand contributes another layer of technical precision.&nbsp;"They work with mechanisms, like hinges — anything you can move, they're really good at that. As a global brand, we try to partner with people from all over who can bring to life the designs and the vision."</p>
