Michael Rider revives an icon, reworking Phoebe Philo&rsquo;s cult-favourite Phantom into a softer, sleeker, and utterly of-the-moment silhouette &mdash; just as oversized bags take back the spotlight.

Fashion, as we know, is circular. When a silhouette becomes iconic, it rarely fades and simply waits for the right moment to return, reimagined to meet the demands of the now. That moment has arrived for Celine. Michael Rider, in his much-anticipated Printemps 2026 debut, has taken one of the house&rsquo;s most recognisable icons &mdash; the Phantom Luggage &mdash; and revived it as the New Luggage. It&rsquo;s a bold but effortless update that proves once again why the oversized carryall deserves a place in today&rsquo;s wardrobe, even after years dominated by micro-bags and barely-there clutches.

First introduced by Phoebe Philo in 2010, the Phantom Luggage became an instant cult object, a design that cemented itself in the history of the maison. Its fluid, wavy lines, themselves a subtle nod to C&eacute;line Vipiana&rsquo;s 1969 Mistral bag, embodied both strength and softness. Rider&rsquo;s iteration honours that legacy while reshaping it for contemporary aesthetics: softer, rounder, and lighter, thanks to a sewn-back construction with piped edges and a new supple lambskin that feels as luxurious as it looks.
At once recognisable and renewed, the New Luggage arrives with fresh details: an oversized east-west option, a newly designed zipper with two expressions, and, most playfully, the Smile Variation, which will pre-launch in September 2025. It&rsquo;s a subtle wink to those in the know.&nbsp;

The collection, available in four core sizes &mdash; Small, Medium, Large, and the ultra-slim Flat Cabas &mdash; is designed for versatility. Whether worn crossbody, on the shoulder, or carried by hand, the New Luggage adapts with ease. The palette leans classic with a twist: black, soft tan, and deep brown sit alongside citrus and oxide blue, while tactile beige suede calfskin and ultra-precious Porosus crocodile in black or chocolate complete the offering.
