The collection is an homage to founder Angelie Alexie Nethercott's mother.

Not every fashion designer can say that they once majored in physics. Or studied occupational therapy for four years. Angelie Alexie Nethercott, founder of accessories brand Alexie, has done both.
Her eponymous label, founded in 2019, is already a budding favorite for its colorfully embellished, handpainted footwear. But now, Nethercott is once again broadening her horizons, debuting her first-ever fine jewelry line, titled Reflexion. The collection features a lustrous 14k gold ring and necklace, inspired by a mother&rsquo;s timelessness, strength, courage, elegance, and heritage.
&ldquo;Difficult times have shifted and expanded my perspective, [allowing] me to embrace new ideas and to celebrate my strength," Nethercott says. "This collection is dedicated to all the hardworking women who continue to power through amidst trying times."
Here, L'Officiel Philippines speaks to Nethercott about Reflexion and Alexie's roots.

<h5>You use a lot of beading, sequins, and hand-painted details to embellish your pieces. How does this reflect who you are as a designer and as a person?</h5>
"I grew up around my mom's ready-to-wear and jewelry business, her beautiful shoe collection, and our house&rsquo;s interior, which was inspired by [that decadent era of European monarchs right before the French Revolution]. I really appreciate anything classic and romantic, from dance and music to fashion.
"My designs are the interaction of opposing extremes, of unity and contrast, composition and raw expression. I pay close attention to the most intricate of details and the subtlest tints and textures."

<h5 style="margin: 0cm;">What piqued your fascination with these materials? What made you decide to use them?</h5>

"When I was a kid, whenever we&rsquo;d go to the toy store, I&rsquo;d always ask my parents to buy me those DIY jewelry-making kits&mdash;the type with beads, sequins, yarn, everything. Ever since bata ako, gumagawa na ako ng mga jewelry pieces na binebenta ko din. Hindi ko alam na yun na pala yung interest ko ever since, dahil bata lang ako na naglalaro noon.

"I think handicrafts have always been my first love. That fascination stuck with me, and until now I still enjoy using the same materials as medium for my art."

<h5>Let's talk about your latest collection. What were your inspirations for it? What made you decide to pursue jewelry, in addition to clothing and shoes?</h5>
"I always take inspiration from all the hardworking women who continue to power through amidst trying times. And one of them is my mom. My mom sold fine jewelry even before I did. She used to bring me with her everywhere she went, and I have witnessed her determination for her craft. I think that influenced my passion now.
"This year, I took the risk to create and launch some jewelry pieces because I wanted to celebrate the 30th year of her motherhood, my birthday, and celebrate the fact that she did a great job raising us. I&rsquo;ve always believed that a child is a reflection of their parents, especially their mothers. Mothers influence our values, characters, and dreams."

<h5>Could you tell us more about your brand? How did it begin? What are your dreams for it?</h5>
"Alexie is a journey of discovery and a canvas of expression. [Its dream is to] birth art pieces that will make people stop, stare, and wonder.
"I always find beauty in things that are odd and imperfect. I like anything that pops! One day I was walking from the train station when I saw a pair of plain slides at a vendor&rsquo;s stall. I bought one pair for me and another for my sister. I took weeks thinking about what I wanted to do with them, then right before my sister's birthday, I chose to finally paint on them. After wearing the slides for a few days, someone asked me where I bought them, then from there I decided to take their order [for a custom pair]."

"I decided to create 100 pairs of slides, inspired by the personality and image of each client. Those 100 pairs ended up becoming the starting point of my brand, Alexie.
"I faced a lot of setbacks and self-doubt in the past, but God guided me towards building this brand. Through Alexie, I want to give back&mdash;it's always been my dream to inspire more people to do what they love. I also want to start a program or an institution that will allow young people to explore their passions&hellip;I have too many plans, but I take it day by day."
