As technology and AI blur the line between human and automation, experts and daters alike ask: can we still fall in love authentically?

Years ago, &ldquo;meeting someone&rdquo; meant bumping into a stranger at a friend&rsquo;s party, getting introduced through mutual circles or &mdash; if you were bold &mdash; striking up a conversation with someone you thought was cute, across the bar or club. For better or for worse, today, it usually means a quick scroll, a few swipes and maybe an exchange that starts with: &ldquo;Hey :)&rdquo; (And sometimes, it simply ends there.) We live in the vibrant, dizzying age of digital connection. And yet, love and true human connection have never felt more elusive.
Dating apps optimized attraction into something swipeable. The next frontier, it seems, is Artificial Intelligence (AI). And what exactly would that look like? AI-powered dating platforms, chatbots that offer emotional support and even everyday AI apps that help you write the perfect flirty opening line. For some, this is efficiency. For others, it&rsquo;s the slow erosion of something sacred and real. And as someone dealing with the jarring reality of modern dating after coming out of a 10+-year relationship, I couldn&rsquo;t help but wonder: what does it really mean to find love in the age of AI? And how do we navigate technology without letting it take over what makes us human?

It&rsquo;s not news to anybody: the modern dating landscape is both vast and exhausting. A quick pulse check among single friends reveals the same sentiment: people are dating (or at least open to), but they&rsquo;re tired and, to be honest, a little jaded. Burnout from online dating has predominantly replaced real-life &ldquo;butterflies&rdquo; and chemistry, with fewer people meeting their partners organically.
The current dating climate has shifted. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not as active, but people are casually dating,&rdquo; says coach <a href="https://www.vanessaantonio.com/">Vanessa Antonio</a>, the Philippines&rsquo; first US-certified matchmaker and science-based dating coach, and founder of Singles Events Manila which offers a suite of services with the intention of helping people make real, authentic connections offline. &ldquo;When we started, people were still optimistic about love. Now, people are tired. They have a negative sentiment around love.&rdquo;
It&rsquo;s not difficult to see why. The constant swiping, ghosting and comparing can make even the most hopeful person jaded. &ldquo;I feel like their view started to become more negative just because you have three dating apps on your phone, and if you don't know how to use it, you'll be disappointed,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Especially if you can&rsquo;t take the rejection.&rdquo;
Rejection, Antonio explains, isn&rsquo;t personal. It&rsquo;s just part of the process. &ldquo;We all tend to find shortcuts. What is the fastest way to eliminate people on dating apps? [You usually go for] height, weight and how they look&hellip; We don't really take time getting to know them. It&rsquo;s an illusion that we have so many options,&rdquo; she says.

Maybe, just maybe, if you hold off on this one match, the next could be the one. But that mindset, Antonio says, makes people more disposable, more impatient and less open to real discovery.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s so easy to meet people, but it&rsquo;s harder and harder to connect,&rdquo; she continues. &ldquo;Some people would say, it&rsquo;s so hard because [on the apps] people are just out to sleep around and not looking for love. But I disagree, people still want love. It&rsquo;s a basic need &mdash; it&rsquo;s in our nature to find somebody to love and to be loved. We didn&rsquo;t lose the love part. We lost the connection and the distractions increased. There are so many people you can meet, but we are so shallow now.&rdquo;
The solution, she says, is to embrace the way we meet and match in this day and age, seeing technology as a tool. &ldquo;Meet them on dating apps, use it as an introduction, but you have to meet them in person and build that connection in real life,&rdquo; Antonio adds. Her tone is pragmatic and sensible &mdash; easier said than done, but still hopeful.

For the past 12 years, Antonio has been in the business of love. Her company started as a singles event, which grew into matchmaking after successful love matches and marriages. Today, it has evolved into a full-fledged dating consultancy. &ldquo;So, like headhunters, right?&rdquo; she says with a smile. &ldquo;You&rsquo;d hire headhunters to find you an executive for a company. We are heart hunters, [in that sense]. You hire us to expedite the process of finding somebody who matches you &mdash; and somebody who deserves you as well.&rdquo;
Antonio&rsquo;s passion comes from what she calls a &ldquo;deep desire to understand love&rdquo;. To her, dating isn&rsquo;t just about finding someone &mdash; it&rsquo;s about learning how to date well. And going into dating, whichever way you do it, is really self-development. &ldquo;You learn what they like about you, and what they didn&rsquo;t. Like, what are the impressions that you&rsquo;re giving off? You will know what type of men and women are attracted to you and what type of men and women are repelled by you. It is a data collection process of understanding yourself. And in that process, finding somebody is just the diploma.&rdquo;
That&rsquo;s also where she sees AI fitting in. &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s very smart to use AI,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Because AI is there, in my perspective, to improve. Improve our work, maybe improve our photos too. AI is helpful and I think that&rsquo;s the future.&rdquo;
Antonio is realistic about what&rsquo;s coming. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s research that says that in 10 years, most of us are going to meet our partners through apps and online dating, right? And AI is a big part of that.&rdquo; But she draws a clear line between enhancement and replacement. &ldquo;I think using AI in love, that&rsquo;s when it gets bad. When first, it&rsquo;s very far already from your authentic self. If you&rsquo;re using AI to flirt (better) with a person, like, who&rsquo;s falling in love? Is it the AI or you?&rdquo;
Her advice is simple: use AI to polish your representation, not to play pretend. &ldquo;Use it to check your grammar, maybe reword what you&rsquo;re trying to say better. But do not make the AI talk to somebody. Like, I understand if you use it to vet or maybe send the first three messages. But really getting into conversations &mdash; what are you doing? Is the AI going to get married to this person? Have kids with this person?&rdquo;
She pauses before adding, &ldquo;AI is good when you use it to improve your presentation. But AI becomes bad if you rely on it as a replacement for you.&rdquo;

Among modern daters, there&rsquo;s growing discomfort with how technology &mdash; and now AI &mdash; has begun to filter and curate even our most intimate interactions.
Some use AI to draft replies, navigate conflict or plan dates. Others admit that while it helps them to articulate what they want to say at times, it can feel inauthentic, like someone else is speaking for them. A few confess that it makes online dating feel even less human, adding another layer of illusion on top of an already fragmented experience.
Still, others see the upside. Some appreciate how AI &ldquo;takes the pressure off&rdquo;, especially for introverts or those who struggle to communicate. Others point to AI-powered verification tools as a huge win for safety &mdash; &ldquo;at least now you know you&rsquo;re not talking to a poser,&rdquo; as one put it.
Yet, the tension remains the same: technology can start conversations, but it can&rsquo;t sustain connections. Algorithms can simulate chemistry, but they can&rsquo;t replicate the quiet thrill of realizing someone&rsquo;s laugh feels like home.

We&rsquo;re more connected than ever, yet loneliness rates continue to rise. AI companions like Replika or Anima promise emotional support, offering the illusion of intimacy without the vulnerability of real connection.
For some, this feels comforting, leaving the door open for possibility for AI companionship as technology advances: &ldquo;If it becomes the level of Jarvis from Iron Man; or Scar Johansson from Her, then maybe.&rdquo; For others, it barely passes as a substitute. After all, an AI partner never ghosts, never argues, never disappoints &mdash; but it also never surprises, never reaches back, never holds you.
Antonio believes the craving for digital intimacy stems from something far more primal. &ldquo;In all the steps we take falling in love or becoming attracted to someone, the most important thing is touch,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Men and women fall in love differently. Women need emotional connection before we connect with them physically, before we are comfortable being touched. Men interpret a friendly touch or even light touch as a positive sign that you like them. So, if you just stay on the app, how can you let them know that, hey, I'm also interested, without [blatantly] telling them that you&rsquo;re interested?&rdquo;
She continues, &ldquo;There&rsquo;s something about the magic of touch that cannot be given when you are online. And people are so touch-deprived right now, that&rsquo;s why there are so many people who are angry, who are so aggressive. Physiologically, touch calms us down &mdash; it makes us feel human.&rdquo;
She adds, &ldquo;When I was in the United States recently, there were events like a hug party, wherein people just go there just to hug each other. They cuddle, very platonic, nothing sexual.&rdquo;
It&rsquo;s a striking image &mdash; and irrefutable proof that even in a hyper-digital age, we&rsquo;re still creatures of contact, starved for warmth in a world that keeps offering us screens that leave us feeling more alone than ever.

Hearing candid stories from others and thinking about my own return to the dating world, it&rsquo;s obvious that something&rsquo;s missing and that real change starts with us &mdash; if we&rsquo;re truly willing to show up for it.
&ldquo;I wish people were more intentional,&rdquo; one person shared. &ldquo;More emotionally available, more self-aware.&rdquo; Another wished for more curiosity &mdash; &ldquo;that kind of wonder that makes dating exciting instead of strategic.&rdquo;
Antonio agrees. &ldquo;When people in their 30s come to me and say, &lsquo;Coach, it&rsquo;s so hard to date&rsquo;, I tell them, no. This is just the beginning. I&rsquo;ve had more suitors and even better-quality suitors, in my 30s.&rdquo; Her optimism challenges the fatalism that surrounds modern dating. &ldquo;Age is not a limitation when it comes to finding love,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Your pool may get smaller, yes, but your standards get higher. You&rsquo;ve learned from life.&rdquo;
And for those discouraged or anxious about finding a partner, she offers a reminder that while love is never guaranteed, it doesn&rsquo;t mean that it isn&rsquo;t abundant. &ldquo;Take care of yourself and learn how to date. There&rsquo;s no guarantee in life, in love &mdash; everything is just borrowed. If you lost the love of your life, it doesn&rsquo;t mean that you cannot find another love of your life. You can. There&rsquo;s no single soulmate. There are multiple soulmates in this lifetime.&rdquo;

Love still belongs to those who are willing to show up for it.

Collectively, we are still learning how to love in an age that moves faster than emotion can process. Technology will keep evolving and AI will continue to shape how we present ourselves and connect &mdash; but it shouldn&rsquo;t define or limit what connection ultimately feels like.
Perhaps the real task now is to stay open: to life, to experience, to one another. To connect not only in the hopes of finding love or a partner, but because reaching out, being seen and feeling understood are deeply human needs. AI can be a tool, one that helps us express and understand ourselves better, but it should never become a crutch. After all, what&rsquo;s perfect and automated feels inauthentic &mdash; stripping away the very thing that makes connection meaningful.
In the end, love still belongs to those who are willing to show up for it: imperfectly and in real life &mdash; and may we all still have the hope (and courage) to find it.
