Chiva-Som, located in Thailand&rsquo;s Hua Hin, isn&rsquo;t just a place to retreat&mdash;it&rsquo;s where you begin to notice the quieter shifts of the self, across mind, body, and spirit. With 30 years of experience, this wellness resort resists the gloss of the luxury industry. Phones and cameras are prohibited in communal grounds. What&rsquo;s enforced, however, isn&rsquo;t performance but clinical precision in tracking health and delivering hospitality. It&rsquo;s not a place for selfies; it&rsquo;s a place for the self. You leave without photos, but may feel like you&rsquo;ve seen yourself in the clearest mirror.

I couldn&rsquo;t have picked a better or worse time. April is the hottest month in Thailand, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 40&deg;C. The humidity turns every moment into a steamy situation. But it&rsquo;s also the month of Songkran, the traditional New Year festival infamous for gathering the world&rsquo;s largest water fight, especially among the crowds of Silom or Khao San. Beyond the parties, its true purpose is cleansing and renewal, so after a few days in the city, I left Bangkok&rsquo;s commotion for the peace and quiet of Hua Hin&mdash;home to Chiva-Som.
It&rsquo;s a three-hour drive from the capital, but I barely noticed the journey. A chauffeured limousine picked me up 30 minutes before call time. Refreshments and ample legroom made the transit seamless. If not for the Buddhist temples, the rustic sideroads could easily pass for Tagaytay, the town south of Manila overlooking Taal Volcano. Both towns are easy holiday escapes&mdash; but Chiva-Som reframes what a holiday means.

<h4 style="text-align: center;">Finding Holy</h4>

I arrived at the lakeside lounge, greeted with a garland of fresh roses and jasmine blossoms, followed by a refreshing cold towel and a glass of lemongrass tea. A buggy ride took me to my room&mdash; an intimate suite accented by teak and silk&mdash;tucked within lush gardens. As a staunch advocate of gradual hydration (drinking in sips throughout the day rather than in fewer, larger intakes), I noticed how Chiva-Som builds it into the experience. My room was fitted with multiple hydration points, from the bedside to the pantry, replenished daily with apple cider and mulberry juice, among other treats. As soon as I settled, I met my Health and Wellness Advisor.
We discussed my medical history&mdash;I mentioned how starved I was of deep sleep, and how my upper back carries my stress. She showed me a booklet of Chiva-Som&rsquo;s wellness programs, comprising six modalities: spa, fitness, physiotherapy, holistic health, nutrition, and aesthetic beauty. Under each category was a long list of hyper-specific treatments, from Abhyanga massage and Colonic Hydrotherapy to Fascia Release Therapy and Body Jet Blitz. She then opened a spreadsheet to map out my hourly and daily appointments.
Whether or not you&rsquo;re aware of its reputation as a pioneer, you quickly realize you&rsquo;re in the hands of exacting practitioners. &ldquo;Your body is a temple&rdquo; may be a Catholic concept, but it&rsquo;s a lived truth in the beachside sanctuary founded by former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Boonchu Rojanastien. The name itself means &ldquo;Haven of Life,&rdquo; and it dares you to hold your body&mdash; and your life&mdash;with a kind of reverence you don&rsquo;t usually practice.
By joining the lively water parade and participating in the Songkran ceremony of Rot Nam Dam Hua&mdash;the bathing of a Buddha image&mdash;I realized that rituals, whether spiritual, mental, or physical, run on the same logic: repetition, structure, and devotion.
Chiva-Som is neither a church nor an ashram, but it can feel just as compelling. In the age of social media, where else do people in an idyllic setting choose to ignore their phones?

I&rsquo;m not trying to frame my stay as a religious or transcendental experience. Contrary to wellness tropes, Chiva-Som isn&rsquo;t all enlightenment and namaste. It resists superlatives and extremes, favoring a bespoke, holistic approach to well-being anchored in moderation.
&ldquo;Light is life!&rdquo; is the motto of the resort&rsquo;s cookbook (Cooking with Light, 2015), and it carries through every recipe. The menu is never restrictive. Over meals, Sorasa&mdash;who often joined me at the table&mdash;would say, &ldquo;People think healthy food is just vegetables and a boring menu, when in fact, at Chiva-Som, it&rsquo;s not like that. We offer a wide variety of cuisines with ingredients from our own organic gardens. We don&rsquo;t deep-fry, use refined sugar, or rely on heavy flavoring. When food is cooked properly, your digestion works better, and you feel better. So everything is kept in proper portions, with small dishes that allow you to enjoy more, because if food feels restrictive, you don&rsquo;t enjoy your life.&rdquo;
Restraint becomes beside the point; the food is that good. I could eat Tom Kha Gai, a fragrant coconut soup with chicken and banana blossoms, without worrying about overeating. Based on the menu breakdown, it totals only 110 kilocalories, leaving plenty of room for dessert.
That&rsquo;s not even the fun part. I could mix and match drinks and starters, from herbal teas like the cholesterol-reducing Safflower and detoxifying Rosella to funkier concoctions like the Wheatgrass Shot&mdash;an alkalizing boost for digestion. The range is expansive: powders, jams, condiments, and pastries. One minute, I&rsquo;m on pumpernickel with almond butter; the next, cooling off&nbsp;with Khao Chae, a seasonal Thai dish of rice soaked in chilled,&nbsp; flower-scented water, usually infused with rose or ylang-ylang.

After eating, everyone is encouraged to walk, stretch, or enjoy the sun. &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t stay in one position for too long. That causes stiffness and imbalances,&rdquo; my physiotherapist says. This belief is rooted in Thai Traditional Medicine, which assigns the four elements&mdash;Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire&mdash;to the body, each governing different functions and working together to maintain balance. Being Earth-dominant, I&rsquo;m advised to utilize Wind by moving more. It governs motion, circulation, and digestion.
When life gets in the way and movement becomes limited, massage is a healthy intervention for relieving tension. I&rsquo;ve never had as many massages in such a short time, but intentional touch can locate pain points. I always thought my tightness stemmed from my shoulders, but it was actually coming from my midsection. I wouldn&rsquo;t have known this without my TTM consultant, who administered my favorite therapy: the Royal Thai Massage.
It&rsquo;s a refined and formal style historically practiced in royal courts. It focuses exclusively on the use of hands and fingertips for precise pressure point therapy, tracing Sen Energy Lines (meridians) to release blockages. It&rsquo;s unlike anything I&rsquo;ve had. You feel the heat moving through your muscles and veins without the need for heavy kneading.
None of these experiences comes with a prescription, but once you&rsquo;ve tried them, you&rsquo;re subscribed for life.

<h4 style="text-align: center;">Future Reflections</h4>

The calm exterior of Chiva-Som might suggest a luxury getaway, but luxury isn&rsquo;t its main draw. It ticks the usual boxes&mdash;spacious low-rise pavilions, koi ponds, lush greenery, meandering pathways&mdash;but what sets it apart is the kind of traveler it attracts: those who aren&rsquo;t looking to be seen. These are people who come to disappear&mdash;for days, weeks, even months. You may occasionally cross paths with big names and familiar faces. There&rsquo;s a moment of silent recognition, followed by an unspoken covenant: don&rsquo;t intrude on someone else&rsquo;s private time.
Chiva-Som proves that stillness can be its own form of activity. There&rsquo;s no shame in resting. Even exercise here isn&rsquo;t about optimization, but about building a routine you can take with you after checkout. Not all movement is active. Massages may melt away tension, but they can also leave you sore and sensitive&mdash;in the best way. Through external pressure, they mobilize muscles and joints. It&rsquo;s not merely relaxation, but a form of passive exercise.
You can join standard fitness classes such as Tai Chi, Pilates, and Yoga, but there&rsquo;s a whole world of more specific disciplines to choose from. I attended an Anapanasati meditation workshop, where a steady focus on breath gradually settled the mind, followed by a guided relaxation session shaped by the soft sounds of tuning forks and chakra chimes. I ended the day with a Crystal Massage and Quantum Healing, which pairs traditional massage with crystal-based energy work.
Spending a day at the spa, surprisingly, made me crave movement. It&rsquo;s as if my body has been reawakened. Eager to test my flexibility the next morning, I joined a hike to the Buddhist temple, Wat Khao Krailart, and visited the nearby Krailart Niwate site, a Chiva-Som project dedicated to restoring degraded mangrove forests. The initiative began in 2014 to help restore coastal ecosystems that play a vital role in mitigating the impact of climate change.

What Chiva-Som is to the environment, it is to wellness: preventive, not reactive. It treats the body as something to care for before it breaks&mdash;physically or emotionally. Like the mangroves, it requires sustained care.
This idea echoed in a workshop on emotional clarity led by Nicholas Harris, who spoke about the parasympathetic nervous system&mdash;the network that governs rest and recovery&mdash;and how it, too, depends on consistent support. Walking through the resort&mdash;past the sea, the flowers, the Banyan tree&mdash;I found myself returning to that point. Around me, there were no crowds gathered in conversation, only individuals moving quietly through their own process&mdash;trying to feel better, to see more clearly.
Back in my room, I wrote down a few lines from the talk.
&ldquo;Peace is our natural way of being.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The mind is like water&mdash;when it is still, it reflects clearly; when it is disturbed, it cannot reflect.&rdquo;
I folded my clothes, unraveled the sheets, and paused before closing the curtains. The Songkran moon cast a soft glow over the villas. Everything looked fine and pristine in the low light.
But clarity doesn&rsquo;t come from dimness. It requires seeing things as they are, without softening the edges.
At Chiva-Som, I had my deepest sleep in a long time, not because everything was perfect, but because nothing was obscured.
