From September 5 to 21, 2025, HUGIS: When Memories Take Shape opens at ArtistSpace, Ayala Museum.

HUGIS: When Memories Take Shape is a contemporary art exhibition featuring the works of 0270501 and Veronica Ibarreta. The show, curated by Marika Constantino, draws inspiration from collective remembrance and the art of becoming. It also showcases the indigenous materials and unconventional processes of each artist.
&ldquo;As such, their combined creative outputs result into a tangible mediation and meditation on creativity that is both generative and restorative. For 270501 and Veronica Ibarreta, it evokes lived experiences and the act of becoming,&rdquo; furthers Constantino.

The exhibition brings together two contrasting artistic voices, creating a dynamic dialogue between abstraction and intimacy, destruction and beauty, motion and stillness. For 270501, whose work often engages with abaca, volcanic ash, and other raw materials, the creative process is &ldquo;controlled chaos.&rdquo; His pieces, regarded as artifacts and mementos, represent an exchange between artist and matter. He adds that by &ldquo;transforming various objects of rich industrial history, the entropy takes over, setting a spiritual gesture of art in motion.&rdquo;
Veronica Ibarreta, meanwhile, approaches her practice with meticulous pointillism. Known for her evocative floral series, she uses the technique as both contemplation and meditation, producing canvases painted dot by dot. In HUGIS, she extends her range through mixed media experimentation while remaining rooted in themes of identity, nationalism, individuality, and female empowerment. She reflects, &ldquo;Sa milyong tuldok sa oil, hinahabi ko ang mga mundong ang tiyaga ay nagiging ganda at ang oras ay magiging magandang kulay.&rdquo;
Her earlier exhibition VESTIDO embodied similar themes of cultural heritage and social relevance, anchoring her practice in both her Bicol hometown and her life in Manila.

For Constantino, memory in HUGIS is not about nostalgia alone but about reclamation. Through material and form, the works of 0270501 and Ibarreta confront overlooked histories, offering visual terrains that reconstitute how we see ourselves and our shared lineage.
Presented by The Art House, the exhibition is also a statement of advocacy. Founder and CEO Juan Carlos M. Pineda concludes: &ldquo;At The Art House, our goal is to empower artists like 0270501 and Veronica Ibarreta. Shows like HUGIS allow us to continuously challenge our roster of artists to further their commitment to exploring materiality&mdash;and in the process, shape their identities as Filipino artists.&rdquo;
