Arriving at SM Aura, Aesop transforms its space into an intimate archive of LGBTQIA+ narratives, offering a curated selection of free books.&nbsp;

If you’ve ever watched or simply scrolled past a clip of RuPaul’s Drag Race, chances are you’ve heard the iconic line: "Reading is fundamental.” Popularized in ballroom culture and immortalized in the landmark documentary Paris is Burning, ‘reading’ refers to the art of delivering witty critique with razor-sharp precision. But beyond the shade and humor lies something deeper: a culture and community built on attentiveness, self-awareness, and storytelling.&nbsp;
In this sense, this phrase has taken on another significance today. For LGBTQIA+ communities whose stories have been erased or overlooked for much of history, reading has become fundamental in another way. It now offers an avenue for their narratives to be told, shared, and preserved. More than ever, reading has become an act of reclamation — bringing stories once kept in the shadows into the spotlight.&nbsp;

It’s this belief in the power of literature that lies at the heart of the Aesop Queer Library’s arrival in the Philippines. Now in its sixth year worldwide, the initiative takes over Manila in its store at SM Aura, BGC, from June 26 to 28, transforming the space into a temporary library dedicated to LGBTQIA+ voices. In place of the brand’s familiar displays, shelves will be adorned with a curated selection of books by queer authors, each available for guests to take home — no purchase needed

With the theme Body of Work, this year’s edition centers on the conversation about the human body as a vessel where personal identity and public expression intersect. By featuring works that highlight queer lives and experiences, the collection expands conversation surrounding individuality and visibility, while paying homage to the stories that have long existed beyond the margins.&nbsp;
For its inaugural Philippine edition, the library will showcase 29 titles in both English and Filipino drawn from the catalogs of local publishers, such as Anvil Publishing, Adarna House, Lampara Books, and Milflores Publishing. In addition, the featured talents include National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, author Segundo D. Matias, Jr., and poet Jerico Silvers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Inspired by the enduring legacy of a master storyteller, Aesop has long embraced literature as a catalyst for reflection, connection, and discovery. Since launching the Queer Library in 2021, the Australian beauty brand has shared more than 115,000 books into the hands of readers and bookworms around the world, harnessing the power of storytelling to encourage dialogue and create pathways for representation. Now landing in Manila, the initiative invites local audiences to explore and engage in narratives that challenge inherited perspectives, illuminate diverse experiences, and celebrate identities in all forms.&nbsp;
