First introduced by Jean Schlumberger in 1965, Tiffany &amp; Co.’s Bird on a Rock returns in a new collection of fine and high jewelry that looks to flight, movement, and the house’s own archives.

Birds have always had a certain attitude in jewelry. They perch where they please, catch the light, and, when Jean Schlumberger is involved, occasionally sit on some of the world’s most extraordinary gemstones.
For Tiffany &amp; Co., that bird is the Bird on a Rock. First introduced in 1965, Jean Schlumberger’s playful design quickly became one of the house’s signatures. Inspired by a yellow cockatoo he encountered while traveling across Asia and the Caribbean, the original motif paired a sculptural bird with an unexpected gemstone beneath it. Decades later, it would famously become the setting for the Tiffany Diamond.
Now, under Nathalie Verdeille, Chief Artistic Officer of Jewelry and High Jewelry, Tiffany is giving the icon some new places to land.
<h3 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">Bird on a Rock Fine Jewelry</h3>
The new fine jewelry pieces bring the bird back into focus, with a figural pendant and earrings that stay close to the familiar silhouette while playing up its wings and sculptural details.
Hand-sculpted in 18-karat yellow gold, the pieces feature bold, textural wings inspired by Schlumberger’s Flames earrings from the late 1950s, which were designed to evoke solar flares. The designers studied the anatomy and movement of birds—from the structure of their wings to the way their feathers sit—to give the pieces a sense of movement.

Chevron engraving runs through the body and collar, while diamonds of varying sizes are hand-set across the gold. Sapphire accents add another flash of color.
The pendant keeps the bird front and center, while the earrings bring the motif closer to the face. Between the textured wings, engraved details and scattered diamonds, there is plenty happening on what is otherwise a rather small bird.
Then the bird gets stripped down to its most recognizable gesture: the wing.
The Wings pieces take that single detail and repeat it across necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings, and rings, pairing 18-karat yellow gold with platinum. Each wing is made from three individual feathers before being assembled into one continuous form.

The mixed metals are a nod to Schlumberger’s own designs, while the construction gives the collection its clean, almost graphic quality. On the platinum wings, diamonds are channel set without prongs or beads, so there is nothing to interrupt the lines of the design. The stones simply follow the shape of the wing and catch the light as it moves.

The bracelet carries the wing motif around the wrist, while the narrow ring pares it down to a single sculptural gesture. Alongside the diamond-set pieces, Tiffany also offers metal-only rings in platinum, yellow gold, and rose gold.

Together, the figural pieces and Wings offer two ways of looking at the same bird: one keeps its personality intact, while the other leaves almost everything but the idea of flight behind.

The high jewelry pieces take the Bird on a Rock into a much more elaborate setting, bringing together platinum, 18-karat yellow gold, diamonds, and rubies.

The necklaces and bracelets play up the contrast between platinum and yellow gold, with diamonds worked throughout and rubies appearing in select pieces. One necklace carries more than 24 total carats of diamonds, while its coordinating bracelet has more than 10 total carats.

There is more scale here, but also more to look at. The platinum gives the pieces a cooler, brighter base, while the yellow gold breaks through the diamonds and metalwork with a warmer tone. The sculptural forms keep the necklaces and bracelets from reading as simply rows of gemstones, giving them a sense of movement even when worn still.

The earrings bring the same combination of 18-karat yellow gold and platinum to a smaller scale, with more than two total carats of diamonds.
More than a straightforward revival, the new collection shows just how much room there has always been inside the Bird on a Rock. Schlumberger’s original design was playful enough to become an icon, but never so fixed that it could not be reimagined.
The design has always left room for interpretation. This time, Tiffany &amp; Co. looks beyond the bird itself—to its wings, its feathers, and the moment just before it takes flight.
After all, a bird was never meant to stay in one place.
