From Aesop and Diptyque to Le Labo and Byredo, luxury hand soaps and body washes are turning everyday routines into status symbols.

There is a new flex in town, and it's happening at the sink. Call it the rise of the bougie basic. These days, popping over to a friend&rsquo;s flat for dinner or crashing for the weekend feels less like hospitality and more like checking into a boutique spa. In the span of a single week, I have washed my hands in Diptyque soap, lathered up in the shower with Le Labo body wash, and had one particularly polished host casually mention that he uses Maison Francis Kurkdjian laundry detergent. Yes, the house behind Baccarat Rouge. Yes, for his delicates.
Under-45s, it seems, have become unapologetic soap snobs. The new status symbol is not a watch or a wine fridge. It&rsquo;s hip hygiene.
And the numbers back it up. The global luxury bath and body market is already worth north of $20.61 billion, and it is projected to reach $28.12 billion by 2028. Fragrance houses, once content to linger on your pulse points, are now making a beeline for your shower shelf.
Fans of Frederic Malle can now bathe in their signature scent with a body wash version of Portrait of a Lady that will set you back around $70. Tamburin has bottled Blue Hinoki, its heady blend of pine oil, blue hinoki and driftwood, into a chic see-through pump designed to live beside your basin. And if you are loyal to your signature spritz, Byredo has you covered with a body wash to match your beloved Bal d&rsquo;Afrique.
It was not always like this. Cleanliness got a hard rebrand during the pandemic, when hand sanitiser became the world&rsquo;s most-wanted accessory. Somewhere between the panic-buying and the perpetual scrubbing, we collectively decided that if we are going to wash, we may as well wash well.
Then TikTok did what TikTok does best: it made it sexy. #showertok has racked up billions of views, turning basic hygiene into a full-blown ritual. We are talking multi-step routines, aesthetically stacked glass bottles, artisanal wooden body brushes, and all the kind of bathroom styling that makes your shower look like it has a skincare routine of its own.
&ldquo;They are an extension of your interiors,&rdquo; says Wirda Ellis of The Chic Code Podcast on Spotify, who treats her hand wash the way others treat scatter cushions. For her, every bottle must match the mood: same palette, same vibe, same quiet-luxury energy. When it comes to sinks and showers, pared-back minimalism reigns supreme.
The data agrees. John Lewis has reported a fivefold spike in searches for the gender-neutral, tonal bottles of Aesop hand soap, those amber apothecary bottles that practically double as d&eacute;cor. Meanwhile, fellow monochrome mainstay Jo Malone London has seen a 224% surge in searches for its own hand wash. Your basin is now a design moment.
&ldquo;Our feeds are filled with perfectly curated homes,&rdquo; says Taylor Bell, a 29-year-old digital creator, in her YouTube deep-dive, &lsquo;How Soap Became a Luxury Category&rsquo;. &ldquo;So there is a natural desire to elevate our own spaces, even in small ways. It is almost like a new form of self-care. If we are spending more time at home, why not make it a little more luxurious?&rdquo;
For Wirda, though, it is also about theatre. Attractive soaps and hand wash are, she says, &ldquo;an absolute flex.&rdquo; A humblebrag in pump form. Although she confesses that the glamour stops at the guest bathroom door. &ldquo;I have a Diptyque hand wash in the guest bathroom,&rdquo; she admits, &ldquo;but a supermarket brand in my own.&rdquo;
Of course, splashing serious cash on something destined for the drain feels at odds with a generation that worships second-hand fashion and rents outfits for weddings. However, history suggests otherwise. Enter the so-called lipstick effect, coined by Leonard Lauder, former chairman of Est&eacute;e Lauder. His theory? When the economy dips, consumers don&rsquo;t stop spending; they simply downsize their indulgences. And in 2026, it seems we are quite literally washing our worries away.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re in this paradox,&rdquo; Bell explains. &ldquo;Despite the cost-of-living crisis, people are reaching for those little luxuries. It&rsquo;s an affordable indulgence mixed with the desire to find joy in the mundane. When big investments like property feel out of reach, splurging on luxe shower gel or fancy detergent becomes a way to reclaim a bit of control. It&rsquo;s like saying, &lsquo;I might not have my dream house yet, but my home will still feel special.&rsquo;&rdquo;
A Herm&egrave;s Birkin might remain firmly on the vision board, but the fashion house&rsquo;s refillable shower gel? Suddenly, that feels entirely justifiable. And if you are going to spiral, you may as well do it surrounded by excellent lather.
