As more men reach for products once reserved for the makeup bag, the question is becoming less about who beauty is for and more about why it ever needed an explanation in the first place.

For a long time, a man reaching for concealer came with an unspoken question: Why?
Not whether the shade matched his skin or whether he liked the finish. The question was what the product supposedly revealed about him.
In the Philippines, where masculinity has often been tied to practicality and an almost casual indifference to appearance, there has always been a fairly clear line between grooming and makeup. Skincare is fine. Hair products are fine. Cologne is expected.
But once a man starts reaching for products traditionally found in a makeup bag, the conversation can quickly become less about the product and more about him.
Men have, of course, always cared about how they look. They just have not always been given the same language for it.
“Grooming” has been acceptable because it suggests maintenance: take care of your skin, fix your hair, smell good, look presentable. “Makeup” can sound different. It suggests a choice to alter or enhance the face, which has always been associated with women.
But why should it be?
There is nothing particularly radical about wanting clearer-looking skin or a more even complexion. Makeup does not automatically become a statement about gender the moment it is used by a man.
For someone who has never considered themselves part of the beauty world, it can simply be another way of getting ready. It does not have to say anything more than that.
Happy Skin’s collaboration with David Guison plays right in that space. The collection brings together familiar grooming products with those that sit closer to makeup, including a Zero Shine Stick, tinted sun stick and Bare Balm.

Guison is a married content creator whose work and public image have not necessarily been centered around beauty, making his presence in the campaign feel less like a statement and more like an everyday part of getting ready.

Local brands are making room for the same idea. Issy has spoken directly to male consumers through its Boys love Issy campaign, with complexion products such as the Active Skin Stick and Under Eye Brightening Fluid, while Absidy has featured male actor Vince Maristela in campaigns for its Shape &amp; Define eyebrow pencil.

But seeing more men in beauty campaigns is only part of the picture. For years, makeup has been a form of self-expression for people who have used it to question and play with conventional ideas of gender. There should also be room for the person who does not want to make a statement at all.
After all, confidence has never belonged to one gender. Neither has vanity. Neither has self-expression. Neither has the desire to look in the mirror and feel good about what looks back. Beauty has always been about presentation, but presentation does not have to come with a label.
Maybe the future is not about making men more comfortable with makeup. Maybe it is about making makeup so ordinary that a person’s sexuality no longer enters the conversation at all.
So, is beauty becoming genderless?
Maybe the more telling sign is that we are starting to ask the question at all. What once seemed to belong firmly to one side of the beauty aisle is now being picked up, worn, shared and marketed to people who were never traditionally part of the picture.
The boundaries are becoming harder to see. And perhaps that is what it looks like: not everyone looking the same, but everyone having a little more freedom to decide what makes them feel good.
Because beauty does not need to tell us who someone is. Sometimes, it is just there to make them feel a little more like themselves.
